Marc Webb's sequel "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" opens in the U.K today and the end-credits scene has fanboys freaking out about a potential crossover. The clip is from "X-Men: Days of Future Past" and features Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique and a few other prominent characters of the ensemble. Could this mean we finally get to see Spider-Man in the same universe as the X-Men? Not exactly.

Variety has learned that you should put your hope on hold for now, as the reasoning is actually a contractual one. Reportedly, Webb had an existing contract with Fox Searchlight to direct another film after his enchanting "500 Days of Summer" in 2009. He got swept away in 2012 to direct Sony's new Spider-Man trilogy and after a disagreement with Fox due to his previously stated agreements, a new type of negotiation was made. Fox agreed to allow Webb to direct the sequel for Sony but only if Sony would promote it's "X-Men" film for free. Very clever stipulation from Fox, if you ask me.

Marvel under the Disney proper umbrella has made those end-credits as popular as they are today. They aren't the ones that started it of course, but they gave fans a reason to actually stay for the credits and eluded to other elements of their expanded universe and projects being connected.

So sadly my friends, for all of us hoping the big studio heads had hugged it out and can work together, don't get too excited yet. Will they ever come to an agreement to allow us to see characters that were created in the same universe, actually share the same screen? Looks like we're going to have to hold our breath a while longer.

What do you make of this situation? Let us know in the comments section below!
