Johnny Depp is heading back to his dramatic roots and we certainly aren't mad about it. After his sci-fi stint with Wally Pfister's "Transcendence" and his upcoming role as the infamous Whitey Bulger in "Black Mass", word of Depp's next project has surfaced and it's a rather magical one. Literally.

Depp will play Harry Houdini in the upcoming "The Secret Life of Harry Houdini". The film will be directed by Dean Parisot, who brought us the hilarious "Galaxy Quest", as well as "Red 2". The story is based on the 2009 book of the same name by writers William Kalush and Larry Sloman.

The synopsis is as follows:

Since his death eighty-eight years ago, Harry Houdini’s life has been chronicled in books, in film, and on television. Now, in this groundbreaking biography, renowned magic expert William Kalush and bestselling writer Larry Sloman team up to find the man behind the myth. Drawing from millions of pages of research, they describe in vivid detail the passions that drove Houdini to perform ever-more-dangerous feats, his secret life as a spy, and a pernicious plot to subvert his legacy.

"The Secret Life of Houdini" traces the arc of the master magician’s life from desperate poverty to worldwide fame—his legacy later threatened by a group of fanatical Spiritualists led by esteemed British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Initiating the reader along the way into the arcane world of professional magic, Kalush and Sloman decode a life based on deception, providing an intimate and riveting portrayal of Houdini, the man and the legend.

I'm not going to lie, I love me a good magician tale. When Christopher Nolan's "The Prestige" as well as Neil Burger's "The Illusionist" were released in 2006, I was certainly a happy camper. There's something sexy about drama and magic spliced together and it's a pretty satisfying story to play out on the big-screen. Anchored by Depp's talent, this new one is coming together rather nicely.
