Adam McKay Takes Himself Out of Running to Direct ANT-MAN

By Amirose Eisenbach June 2, 2014

Ever since Edgar Wright abruptly departed Marvel's "Ant-Man", the hunt for a new director has been aggressively on. If they have any hope of hitting the July 17, 2015 release date, they need to finalize this gigantic piece of the puzzle immediately. It's been reported that a short list of three names are being eyed to take over.

That list includes Adam McKay ("Anchorman"), Rawson Thurber ("We're the Millers") and Ruben Fleischer ("Zombieland"). McKay was announced as the frontrunner and after entering negotiations to replace Wright, has since taken himself out of the running for picture and the search for a new helmer is still on.

Does that mean either Thurber or Fleischer will take over the reigns or will a new name be added to the mix? Thurber is mostly known for quirky comedies. Fleischer has a couple of quality comedy/dramas under his belt but his most recent film "Gangster Squad" was met with very disappointing reviews.

This property is a very large undertaking for anyone and both Marvel and the new director have a lot on the line. Wright left some big shoes to fill since he's been associated with the project for years and was very passionate about the property. Not to mention his departure leaves a bit of a yellow flag for directors to pay attention to.

Marvel is producing quality film after quality film and their box-office results and reviews are beyond impressive. Certainly most directors, especially a hungry up-and-coming one, would love the career-changing opportunity. Right?
