After the departure of Will Smith from the new sci-fi "Brilliance", Jared Leto was in talks to fill the lead role. Following in the footsteps of Smith, Leto too has now officially taken his name out of the running.
After reportedly meeting with director Julius Onah about the project last week, there is no official statement as to why he is no longer interested. Of course being in the industry that we are, this is about the time that speculation runs wild.
It was previously announced that Leto was one of the contenders for the upcoming Marvel property "Doctor Strange". "Sinister" helmer Scott Derrickson is directing the obscure comic-book property and Leto's name is still apparently on the list. Other quality actors such as Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hardy were also mentioned as being potential candidates but as of now, this is all just hearsay and nothing has been officially confirmed by the studio or actors.
The story of "Brilliance" revolves around a group of people with heightened cognitive abilities, coined as "brilliants". Leto would have played federal agent Nick Cooper, who uses his special abilities to hunt bad seeds down.
Noomi Rapace from the Swedish "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" film, was set to star alongside Smith when he was attached. It's currently unknown at this time if she too will depart the picture or if she will potentially star opposite the male lead they do lock down.
Whether Leto turned down "Brilliance" because of his potential commitments to Marvel or he just wasn't that compelled to join the project, we certainly won't know until all players involved want us to. But since San Diego Comic Con is quickly approaching and we're at the height of comic-book films, I would imagine we will get some casting news on this front soon.
