Kristen Wiig Making Directorial Debut with New Comedy

By Amirose Eisenbach June 13, 2014

Kristen Wiig is re-teaming with her "Bridesmaids" co-writer Annie Mumolo to co-write and star in a new comedy, where she will also make her directorial debut.

The comedy revolves around two "best friends who find themselves in over their heads and out of their depths." Wiig and Momolo will play the besties.

On the newly announced effort, Wiig and Momolo released a joint statement, which said, "We’re very excited to be writing. We will be going into a cave for months to finish. An actual cave. We found one that’s nice and big. We’re putting a couch in there."

It's certainly a new age for women in comedy. Women like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Elizabeth Banks to name a few, have certainly proven that beauty, brains, talent and comedy can most certainly go hand-in-hand. Wiig has been writing and acting for many moons and if I had to gamble, she seems like she could have a real knack for directing.

While women directors are still in short supply, they definitely do exist. Such powerhouse females as Kathryn Bigelow, Mary Harron, Lynn Ramsay and Sofia Coppola have given us some incredible works of art. But there is still a hunger for more women to step behind the lens and I for one am excited that we'll soon be adding Wiig to that list.
