In breaking news on this lovely Friday, director Rian Johnson has been revealed as the new helmer of the next "Star Wars" film. Johnson is perhaps best known for writing and directing the recent sci-fi tale "Looper" and he is now attached to bringing "Star Wars: Episode VIII" to life.
This is huge news indeed, following the announcements of Gareth Edward and Josh Trank directing two standalone films. While focusing on solo films is still no easy task, one could speculate that focusing on an entire rich galaxy and ensemble of main characters is even larger of an undertaking, so Kathleen Kennedy and team must have great faith in Johnson.
In addition to the Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Emily Blunt sci-fi tale, Johnson is responsible for directing some incredible episodes of "Breaking Bad". He clearly is an unconventional and dare I say, artistic choice.
Before we see Johnson's episode as well as Trank and Edwards' solo films, J.J. Abrams is bringing us "Star Wars: Episode VII". Despite each film having its own unique stamp on it as dictated by its director, we'll know a lot more about what to expect from this universe after we see Abrams' installment.
