Marvel certainly has a knack for picking unconventional directors to bring their comic-book properties to the big-screen. This has been reinforced yet again with the latest announcement of Scott Derrickson being locked to direct "Doctor Strange".
This was confirmed yesterday when Derrickson tweeted out a photo of him reading a Doctor Strange comic with the words "My next movie will be STRANGE". The Doctor, also commonly referred to as Sorcerer Supreme, is one of the darker and more quirky characters within the Marvel Universe. Following the soon-to-be released "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Ant-Man" however, perhaps it feels like less of a risk to explore this one now. Marvel certainly has a beyond successful track record to date after all and it only seems to be getting better.
Derrickson is mostly known for his horror films, which includes such titles as the well-done and terrifying "The Exorcism of Emily Rose", as well as the more recent "Sinister". A director like this seems like a great fit to bring a property like Doctor Strange to life, which would greatly benefit from just the right amount of darkness, tension and comedy.
So a new director is announced for a fresh, obscure property and the hunt for someone to take over for Edgar Wright after his departure from "Ant-Man", is still very much intact. You certainly know how to keep yourself in the news and on the top of our minds, Marvel.
