The topic of female superheroes is always a hot one as fans have wondered when a solo female-fronted superhero franchise will launch. Sure, we have Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow, which is certainly a big step in the right direction with how well she is perceived on-screen. We will also have Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman making her debut in Zach Snyder's "Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice". But beyond that, what about taking a risk on a solo film?
It looks like Sony is gearing up to finally take that risk. According to reports, the studio is planning on developing a female-led superhero film set in the universe of their "Amazing Spider-Man" franchise for 2016. We are unsure of what character they will focus on at this time. "Burn Notice" scribe Lisa Joy Nolan has been brought on to write the script.
After many negative reviews surrounding "The Amazing Spider-Man 2", despite it racking up a ton of money, plans to expand that universe is very much underway. A "Sinister Six" movie is planned for 2016 as well as a "Venom Carnage" film for 2017, followed by "The Amazing Spider-Man 3" targeted for 2018.
We've seen recent franchises led by females like "The Hunger Games" and "Divergent" perform very well at the box office. We also just saw Scarlett Johansson's "Lucy" dominate Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's "Hercules". Does that give this new franchise a big shot at success? We'll find out the answer in 2016, unless another studio beats them to the punch.
