The ultimate game of chicken was going down between Marvel's "Captain America 3" and DC's "Batman V. Superman" when it was announced months ago that that both films would be releasing on May 6th, 2016. The epic game came to a close last week, when WB announced they moved up their property to release in March 2016.
In nearly the same breath, WB also announced nine more releases dates for their superhero properties from 2016 until 2020. The first real sign that they are taking this comic-book film game seriously and that they have a real plan to expand the universe, much like how Marvel has so masterfully done.
On the release date shuffle, Dan Fellman, WB head of distribution, had this to say:
"The reality now is there really isn’t a bad week to open a movie. If you look at the summer box office this year, you can see that there were so many movies, one after the other. You can start with Spider-Man two weeks later Godzilla, and then Maleficent, and then Edge of Tomorrow, and then Jump Street and Transformers. And the one thing they all had in common, not one of them did over $250 million. We’ll be the first one up [in 2016], which is very important, and we’ll have six weeks before Captain America comes in."
The only direction they could have moved to avoid the spread of further negativity was up. It is definitely true that they will now set the stakes against the film they were originally opening up against. But even if this film is spectacular, which I truly hope it will be, Marvel is still leagues above WB in terms of their track record.
Of course we have their amazing "The Dark Knight" trilogy from the masterful Christopher Nolan. But we are now almost on to Phase 4 of the MCU, so WB and team still very much have their work cut out for them to be considered a real player in this space. This new plan howver, is a big move in the right direciton and releasing that date helps both properties.
