Dan Aykroyd Chats Expanding GHOSTBUSTERS Universe

By Amirose Eisenbach September 19, 2014

We've heard murmurs of a "Ghostbusters 3" happening for quite some time. While it hasn't actually come to fruition, it seems to find it's way back into the news rather frequently. Now star and co-creator Dan Aykroyd has reveled that much more than just a third installment may be in store.

When asked about the franchise in a recent interview, Aykroyd said, "It’s beyond just another sequel, a prequel, another TV show. I'm thinking what does the whole brand mean to Sony? What does Pixar and Star Wars mean to Disney? What does Marvel mean to Fox?"

He continued, stating that, "the executives, the creatives, Ivan [Reitman, the director] and myself", are now looking at the next decade to produce new content within the franchise. Despite Ivan Reitman vacating the director's chair for the 2015 released that was previously planned, he is still on as a producer. Does that mean Bill may Murray return as well, despite him previously alluding that he wouldn't? It's hard to pin him down but he makes every project better. Especially one that he helped make so popular.

Using a car analogy, Aykroyd elaborated on the current state of the expanded "Ghostbusters" universe they are trying to build. He said, "It’s up on blocks, it needs new electronics, new everything. That’s what we have to do. The whole vehicle of Ghostbusters has to be rebuilt. That’s the ambitious thinking that’s going on now. Taking on the model of Marvel where we take all of the elements that are in this movie and we put them out there as different ideas."

A female-fronted "Ghostbusters" was recently teased as well and supported by Murray himself. Aykroyd is apparently also on board with that, stating that, "we need to write it."

Well there you have it. Lots in store for this franchise of ghostly-proportions. Will they capture the magic of the original films or has it been too long? Only time will tell but they certainly have a big plan forming.
