Though it only opened in four locations, over the weekend “Birdman” flew high (sorry!) at the box office. The film got $415,000 in total, which may seem like it doesn’t compare to the $23.5m the box office winner “Fury” made, but when you break it down to the amount per location, it actually made an average of $103,750 per theatre. The per theatre average for “Fury” was $7,406.
Understandably, the good folks at Fox Searchlight are pleased. Frank Rodriquez, the SVP of Distribution said, "We are truly amazed and gratified at the reception that 'Birdman' has received so far, and even though we knew people loved the film from its successful Festival screenings, we still did not expect the picture to have the 2nd highest per screen average in the last two years.”
This weekend “Birdman" adds 18 new areas, and expands in NY and LA, so it’s total theater count will be between 45-50 screens.
