In 2013, Oscar-nominated documentary director Laura Poitras started getting anonymous emails from someone who called himself “citizen four”. She was working on a documentary about national security post 9/11, and citizen four offered her information and top secret documents, allegedly showing government abuses on national security.
Citizen four was Edward Snowden, and Laura did a series of on-camera interviews with him after he fled to Hong Kong. These interviews and his story have been turned into the documentary “Citizenfour”, executive produced by Steven Soderbergh.
Take a look at the first trailer below:
“Citizenfour” had its debut at the New York Film Festival on Friday, where it got rave reviews. The documentary will be in limited release from October 24.
