The wonderful Neil Patrick Harris is hosting the 87th annual Academy Awards, on February 22nd. He has previously performed on the show but this will be the first time as a host.
While it may be his first time hosting the Oscars, he is no stranger to hosting other awards show. He hosted the Tony Awards last year, as well as the Emmy's in 2013 and 2009.
Coming off his role in David Fincher's critically-acclaimed "Gone Girl" and recently taking home a Tony for starring in the musical "Hedwig and the Angry Inch", Harris is certainly at the top of his game.
On accepting the hosting gig, Harris said, "It is truly an honor and a thrill to be asked to host this year's Academy Awards. I grew up watching the Oscars and was always in such awe of some of the greats who hosted the show. To be asked to follow in the footsteps of Johnny Carson, Billy Crystal, Ellen DeGeneres, and everyone else who had the great fortune of hosting is a bucket list dream come true."
Last year, Ellen DeGeneres ordered pizza for the Hollywood A-listers. The year prior, Seth MacFarlane brought out William Shatner and sang a number about boobs. With his work in the musical theatre, music and showmanship will undoubtedly be a big part of Harris' performance.
Harris is allegedly the third on the list of desired hosts this year. The show producers first asked DeGeneres to return, which makes sense given that last year's show garnered a ton of viewership. Julia Louie-Dreyfus of "Seinfeld" and "Veep" fame was reportedly next in line but also turned it down. That brings us back to Harris, which accepted the duty happily.
To me, Billy Crystal is still the king of the oscars. He brings this level of passion and enthusiasm that most others fail to match. But Harris is a delight, incredibly talented and colorful. I have no doubt he will do a fantastic job.
