After J.J. Abrams stepped in to direct "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", that left "Star Trek 3" to be taken over by another director. Roberto Orci stepped up and as announced late last week, he is no longer directing it.
Orci wrote the first two films in the series under the helming command of Abrams. So while many weren't sure if he was the right man for the job, at the very least, he knows the material well.
The reason for his departure was unclear and we may never know the real cause. Orci will remain on as a producer of the film however, along with Abrams.
Paramount Pictures is still eyeing a 2016 release, so unless they shift that back, we will probably know who will be the successor soon. Edgar Wright's name has been tossed in the mix as he's a very big fan of the franchise. Wright is a fantastic director with a very unique and refreshing style. Perhaps it would help him get the bad taste out of his mouth, as well as for his fans, from his departure from Marvel's "Ant-Man".
