Although we all assumed that Ryan Reynolds would be portraying "Deadpool" in the standalone film, it has now been officially announced. While there was never really any doubt because the film would not be happening without his help, it's still a great confirmation that makes most fans very happy.
Reynolds briefly played the character in the very divisive "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and also in the leaked test footage that helped the film get green lit. His wit, smart-mouth and dry comedic delivery, make him a fantastic fit for the character.
The film is being directed by Tim Miller, who is perhaps best known for his visual effects work on "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World". The script is being written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who brought us the gem "Zombieland".
The Merc with the Mouth as Deadpool is warmly referred to, is known for breaking the fourth wall and for being very violent. The film is rumored to have a PG-13 rating which would disappoint many fans. It's true that you can get away with a lot more these days but a "Blade" film wouldn't have worked so well with a PG-13 rating and the same could be said for a "Deadpool" film. We know the appeal of having it be more mainstream and more openly accessible because of the lower age restriction but I wish they would just take a risk and do it right.
Regardless, the confirmation of a standalone film for the character and Reynolds playing him, is enough to be excited about.
