Roberto Orci departed "Star Trek 3" last week with little reasoning given as to the cause of the exit. The industry naturally went wild, speculating what director could step up to the challenge. Edgar Wright's name was teased but now an official list of five potentials has been released.
According to Deadline, Rupert Wyatt, Morten Tyldum, Daniel Espinosa, Justin Lin and Duncan Jones are at the top of the wish list for Paramount to take over. Jones however, has since taken to twitter to announce that he is not interested in the assigment because of his desire to pursue his own original project instead. Although he would have been a fantastic fit for the franchise, perhaps the best out of the list, you've got to admire his decision and the pursuit of those endeavors.
That leaves the other four on the list. Wyatt is coming off the mixed reviewed "The Gambler" but we won't forget how he gave us the amazing "Rise of the Planet of the Apes". Tyldum is coming off his academy award hopeful "The Imitation Game". Lin of course helped make the "Fast and the Furious" franchise what it is today and Espinosa is best known for directing "Safe House".
A diverse list of talented directors, no doubt. Out of these names, I would be most intrigued with Wyatt because of the difficult themes he was able to explore so gracefully in "Apes" but they would all bring their own unique voice to the franchise.
Orci and Abrams are remaining on as producers. If the studio still wants to hit the 2016 release date, an announcement should surface soon who has stepped up to the job.
