Channing Tatum has been campaigning to play beloved X-Men character Gambit for quite some time now. When one of the hottest and most highly coveted stars right now wants to lead a property like this, when the superhero craze is already at an all-time high, you better believe the studio listens. They see the dollar signs as Tatum has already proven he can open a film to solid results. But can he do the fantastic Cajun character justice? We are about to find out, as a release date has officially been locked.
Tatum took to twitter and Facebook to tease fans with, "How do you say October 7, 2016 in Cajun?" Very clever there, sir. The date has since been officially confirmed by various sources, so Gambit will indeed be getting his own solo film.
This confirmation means that Fox is releasing three X-Men films in 2016, with Ryan Reynold's as "Deadpool" in February, "X-Men: Apocalypse" in May, and now Tatum as "Gambit" in October. The studio is certainly putting a lot of faith in this expanded X-Men universe and I'm personally thrilled about it. Not only because of my deep love for this comic-book series but the last two films in the series, "X-Men: Days of Future Past" and the film prior "X-Men: First Class", were both incredible films, for even those who aren't comic-book fans.
A couple of years ago, I would have scoffed at the idea of Tatum as one of my favorite X-Men characters. Gambit is amazing, smooth, tough and complex. But Tatum has been really challenging himself, as seen in the recent "Foxcatcher" and he works his tail off, trying hard to grow, learn and master his craft. It doesn't hurt that he's also an incredibly kind individual. Tatum is also very passionate about the character as he's proven, so all these elements allow me to give him the benefit of the doubt. Now just don't let me down, Tatum.
Every studio is trying to get in the superhero game. Some have just been a bit more successful than the others at it. Disney and the Marvel Cinematic Universe are still leagues above the rest in terms of the number of films produced and incredible reception but Fox is certainly in the game with this universe and the upcoming "Fantastic Four" reboot from Josh Trank. WB has also become much more aggressive with their upcoming D.C. slate and who knows what Sony has in store for the Spider-Man universe.. Yes friends, we certainly live in the age of the superhero.
