The topic of film ratings these days is always an interesting one. It's true that you can do a lot more with a milder rating than you used to. We are definitely "loosening up" as a society. But films based on books of a very explicit nature shouldn't really be diluted or perhaps they shouldn't be made at all, if it's not going to be faithful to the content. Such is the case with the new "Fifty Shades of Grey", that has been given an R rating.
Sure, it's good it's at least R and not PG-13. For anyone familiar with the content of the book, in a nutshell, it's about the sexual awakening of a timid woman, into a world of toys, whips and the submissive and dominant. How that wouldn't be NC-17 is beyond me. We of course understand this decision from a monetary perspective. Being rated R already isolates the PG-13 crowd without adult supervision, so this at least keeps accessibility more expanded that NC-17.
A certain stigma also accompanies an NC-17 rating, unfortunately. While we've come a long way, we are still very afraid of showing too much flesh. The Steve McQueen and Michael Fassbender collaboration "Shame" was rated NC-17. So was the beautiful french film "Blue is the Warmest Color". While these films were artistically explicit and meaningful films, it still isolates a large part of an audience.
The R rating for "Fifty Shades of Grey" has been given, due to " strong sexual content including dialogue, some unusual behavior and graphic nudity, and for language." I guess the whips part will be in the unusual behavior section?
Jamie Dornan stars as the wealthy and mysterious Christian Grey and Dakota Johnson stars as the timid, young woman Anastasia Steele. The film is being directed by indie filmmaker Sam Taylor-Johnson and will arrive just in time for a steamy Valentine's date, don't you worry.
