FIFTY SHADES OF GREY Slays Box Office Setting New February Record

By Amirose Eisenbach February 17, 2015

We knew that "Fifty Shades of Grey" would make a lot of money. Between the controversy surrounding it, the hate-watching, curiosity, girlfriends dragging their boyfriends and single ladies' nights out, monetary success was implied. We couldn't fathom however, that it would bring in this much.

The film, which was directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, has set the new February box office record and racked up $85 million domestically. Worldwide, the film has already made $267 million on a $40 million budget. Needless to say, the second and third films have already been given the green light. Don't put the whips away just yet, Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson.

In the #2 spot was the new Matthew Vaughn-directed film "Kingsman: The Secret Service", which made an impressive $36 million. The rated-R action film starred Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson and Mark Strong and was received with great praise and audience love. A sequel could very well be on the horizon. Fingers crossed.

In the 3rd position is "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water", which took in an additional $31 million to bring its two week total up to $95 million domestically and almost $150 million worldwide.

In 4th place was Clint Eastwood's "American Sniper" with $16 million and and in the 5th spot was "Jupiter Ascending", which made $9 million.

The big surprises were of course the commendable opening of "Kingsman" and the ridiculous cash cow called "50 Shades".
