Matthew Vaughn Talks Potential HIT-GIRL Prequel

By Amirose Eisenbach February 13, 2015

We all remember when a new hero in the form of "Kick-Ass" emerged on the cinema scene in a big way, as brought to life by Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Then came the sequel, which did not capture the real nostalgia of the first one and had less-the-stellar box office results. After the performance of "Kick-Ass 2", the franchise seemed to be dead in the water. Now Matthew Vaughn, who directed the first film and co-produced the second, says that a "Hit-Girl" prequel could be on the horizon.

In a recent interview, Vaughn stated, "Do you know what's going to be next if I do it...we've finished plotting it. What we have to do is, we've got to do the 'X-Men: First Class' to the Kick-Ass world. We lost a few fans on Kick-Ass 2. It wasn't as loved as one would've hoped. So we have this idea for a Hit-Girl prequel. It's a really strong, really simple prequel where I think we can regain the love and the passion. If that happens, I'm pretty sure I can persuade Aaron and Chloe to come back and finish the story of Kick-Ass with 'Kick-Ass 3'. Mark and I have already plotted Hit Girl. We have to get the script done next. It's so far out there, you have no idea."

Vaughn went on to say that he would not direct the third film but would look for a very bold and clever director like "The Raid" helmer Gareth Evans. An inspired directing choice no doubt but has this shipped sailed for this everyman, superhero franchise?

Chloe Grace Moretz is eighteen years old now. Part of the hilarity and charm associated with Hit-Girl originally was this tiny, innocent little girl, who could fight with the best of them. Would they hire a younger actress to play her in flashbacks? Not sure how effective that would work.

Part of the magic of the first one was Nicolas Cage as Hit-Girl's father, Big Daddy. While the idea of having him return is rather appealing, after the general disappointment of "Kick-Ass 2", they might want to just let this one rest.

Vaughn is coming off the wildly positive reviews of "Kingsman: The Secret Service". Perhaps a prequel to that would garner more interest.
