Russo Brothers to Direct New GHOSTBUSTERS Film, Channing Tatum to Produce and Star

By Amirose Eisenbach March 10, 2015

We've known for months that Dan Aykroyd and team are set on expanding the "Ghostbusters" universe. We were unsure until now, how serious they were about it. Not only is a female-led reboot being directed by Paul Feig on the way in 2016 but now another reboot has surfaced with a new male ensemble.

On the new reveals, Ivan Reitman stated, "We want to expand the Ghostbusters universe in ways that will include different films, TV shows, merchandise, all things that are part of modern filmed entertainment. This is a branded entertainment, a scary supernatural premise mixed with comedy. Paul Feig’s film will be the first version of that, shooting in June to come out in July, 2016. He’s got four of the funniest women in the world, and there will be other surprises to come. The second film has a wonderful idea that builds on that. Drew will start writing and the hope is to be ready for the Russo Brothers’ next window next summer to shoot, with the movie coming out the following year. It’s just the beginning of what I hope will be a lot of wonderful movies."

Channing Tatum, who is one of the highest demanded actors on the scene right now, is set to co-star and co-produce the film. I may have scoffed at that name five years ago for something like this but after seeing his stellar comedic chops in the "21 Jump Street" franchise, I'm confident he'll bring something great to the film. He is an incredibly hardworking and dedicated individual to boot.

More fantastic name drops from Reitman of course include the Russo Brothers directing the film and Drew Pearce penning the script. After they bring us another hopeful masterpiece, in the form of "Captain America: Civil War", the Bros. would reportedly begin on this one. That insinuates that the Russo's would only be on as producers and not directors to Marvel's other planned properties, namely "Avengers: Infinity War".

This new direction would certainly make a new "Ghostbusters" universe start to take shape, opposed to just doing a sequel to the last film in the franchise. The team is lining up some quality players to bring these ideas to fruition. I'm not sure an entire universe dedicated to this world is needed but they are locking in some great talent to at least allow us to keep an open-mind for now.
