Weekend Box Office: FURIOUS 7 Sets New April Record

By Amirose Eisenbach April 6, 2015

Whether you celebrate Passover, Easter, or both, it was a big holiday weekend at the movies. A new record has been set for a franchise that keeps building momentum.

The "Fast and the Furious" franchise is roaring to even greater speeds as the new "Furious 7" opened to the biggest April release in history with $143 million dollars. It also marks the largest opening for the series in its seven film history. James Wan took over the franchise from Justin Lin and had the difficult task of finishing the film in the wake of Paul Walker's tragic passing. Most fans and critics agree that it was the perfect ending and the proper sendoff of the late actor and it appears that the franchise isn't going to slow down anytime soon.

In second place is the animated film "Home", dropping less than 50% from its opening weekend, making $27.4 million. Rihanna and Jim Parsons lent their vocals to the animated characters in this one.

In the third spot is the Kevin Hart and Will Ferrell comedy "Get Hard", which made $12.9 million. The film premiered at SXSW in Austin this year a couple of weeks ago, before opening in theatrical release.

Kenneth Branagh's "Cinderella" holds onto the number four spot for the second week in a row, making an additional $10.2 million. This helps to push the film to nearing an impressive $400 million worldwide.

Rounding out the top five is "Insurgent", the second film in the "Divergent" series, making $10 million this weekend. Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Kate Winslet and many other familiar faces return for this Young Adult adaptation.
