Weekend Box Office: PITCH PERFECT 2 Dominates, MAX MAD: FURY ROAD Opens Strong

By Amirose Eisenbach May 18, 2015

It's good ol' Monday again, which means the box office results are in and it was a big weekend for supporting some amazing females in the industry.

"Max Max: Fury Road" got Pitch-slapped by the sequel "Pitch Perfect 2", which greatly exceeded expectations and took the #1 spot at the box office with a staggering $70.3 million opening weekend. To put this into perspective, the original "Pitch Perfect" made just $65 million in its entire domestic theatrical run and just $14 million on its opening weekend.

The film marks Elizabeth Banks' directorial debut, who also co-starred in both films and produced the first. Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Brittany Snow and many familiar cast members from the first film returned but no one could have predicted these kind of results. Banks will most certainly get another shot behind the lens soon.

The high-octane, beautiful desert dance of mayhem, known as "Mad Max: Fury Road", took the #2 position, making a respectable $44.4 million. Critics and fans have been raving about this one, which is holding strong at an incredible 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. This is one of the best cinematic experiences to grace the big-screen in years. The intensity and action start when the credits start to roll and they don't let go of you until it concludes. Word-of-mouth should ensure this film continues to hold steady for weeks to come.

In the 3rd spot is "Avengers: Age of Ultron", making $38.8 million, bringing its domestic total up to $372 million in just its 3rd weekend.

In the 4th spot is the Reese Witherspoon comedy "Hot Pursuit", making $5.7 million. And rounding out the top 5 yet again is "Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2", making $3.6 million.

Charlize Theron and Elizabeth Banks are the real stars of the weekend. Theron's Imperator Furiosa was the main protagonist of "Fury Road" and a true force to be reckoned with, lighting up the screen with her fierceness and magnetism. Banks' strong opening showed that many moviegoers will indeed support a female-directed and female-starring picture. One can only hope that these amazing results help other studios have more confidence in female-driven projects.
