Written, produced, and directed by Horace B. Jenkins, an Emmy Award-winning documentarian, and starring Tommye Myrick and Richard Romain, CANE RIVER (1982) is a racially themed love story shot in Natchitoches Parish, a 'free community of color' in Louisiana, with an entirely African American cast and crew. A budding, forbidden romance lays bare the tensions between two groups both descended from slaves but of disparate opportunity--the light-skinned, property-owning Creoles and the darker-skinned, more disenfranchised families of the area. Championed by Richard Pryor when it was made, this lyrical, visionary film disappeared for decades after Jenkins's sudden death at the age of forty-two.
