A rundown loft on Sixth Avenue in the Flower District--it doesn't look like much. Yet between 1957 and 1965 it was the scene for all-night jams and recordings, a regular meeting place of the jazz-obsessed and legends like Thelonious Monk and Hall Overton. All of this might have been lost to history save for the fact that it was being captured on audio tape and still images by the groundbreaking W. Eugene Smith, a LIFE magazine photographer and compulsive documentarian of his own day-to-day experiences. Watching the 1950s turn to the 60s with Smith's camera pointing out from his window perch, Sara Fishko has crafted an unsentimental portrait of unstable genius and a long-lost Manhattan.
