'The Gospel' follows the story of David Taylor (Boris Kodjoe) who is finally at the top of the R&B charts with his new hit single, when a phone call about his estranged father's health summons him from New York back home to Atlanta. Upon David's return he must deal with his father's health and his childhood best friend who has now married David's cousin. What David does not know is that his supposed best friend is determined to take over as pastor of his father's church, destroying everything his father spent his lifetime building.
