This summer, the Men (and Women!) in Black return, in MEN IN BLACK: INTERNATIONAL. The fourth film in the franchise stars THOR: RAGNAROK buddies Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson as a new pair of super-secret agents defending the world from alien invaders. Barry Sonnenfeld , the director of MEN IN BLACK himself, makes a cameo as a famous alien, along with his daughter, Chloe. Sylvester Stallone is also revealed as an extraterrestrial. With that unmistakable voice and those killer muscles, there’s no way the actor best known to fans as Rambo and Rocky Balboa isn’t an alien. When the first MEN IN BLACK hit theatres, legendary singer Dionne Warwick was promoting the Psychic Friends Network in a series of well-known infomercials, which would explain her alien status. Republican politician and former U.S. Representative for Georgia Newt Gingrich is also an alien, as are motivational speaker Tony Robbins, then-NBA star Dennis Rodman, STAR WARS creator George Lucas and director Steven Spielberg. But MEN IN BLACK producer Walter Parkes thinks he has something special in the new pairing of Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, and he’s throwing out classic silver-screen comparisons to describe the chemistry that will be on display in this summer’s MEN IN BLACK: INTERNATIONAL. “These characters, there’s some like Princess Leia/Han Solo in there. There’s Hepburn and Tracy, you know, there’s ... a real sort of texture, and to me, when we’re really singing, it reminds me of some of those iconic duos,” Walter Parkes told CinemaBlend during a recent trip to the London set of MEN IN BLACK: INTERNATIONAL. Those are some iconic duos, but the interplay shared between Hemsworth and Thompson could truly live up to that hype. Audiences have seen the two in action a few times already. They teamed up as Thor and Valkyrie in both THOR: RAGNAROK and AVENGERS: ENDGAME, which is cleaning up at the box office at the moment. But in MEN IN BLACK: INTERNATIONAL, we’ll see a different side of their dynamic. “[Our characters] both misunderstand each other, and one thing that we’ve talked about a lot, Chris and I, is this idea of what do they teach each other?” Tessa Thompson told CinemaBlend. “I think that was something that was so touching about Will and Tommy’s dynamic for the course of the three films is you felt like they really offered each other something. They were able to just be better men, frankly, from being in the company of each other, that they made each other stretch and grow in a way. And that’s played with the easiness that this franchise has, but that it’s inherent.” When Tessa Thompson’s Agent M travels to London to meet and team up with Chris Hemsworth’s Agent H, she finds an overly confident alien tracker who may not be as good as he believes. “My character certainly kind of does things his own way,” Hemsworth said. “He’s pretty reckless in his approach, and he doesn’t take advice from others. He works alone, usually. And then in this particular instance, [my character and Tessa’s character] sort of teamed up together, I think outside of either of their first choice. They’d prefer — she’d probably rather be saddled with someone a little more [laughs] on book. But as I said, it gives us somewhere to go and gives us a nice arc.” Don’t instantly expect there to be romantic sparks, however. “I think with a lot of those [iconic pairings], there’s this undercurrent of emotion, but there are so many directions in which the relationship can go,” Walter Parkes said. “And the thing that really is the most exciting about those relationships, I think, is a true meeting of the mind and of wit, and a sort of back and forth with that. That creates tension.” It’s been years since the MEN IN BLACK franchise has graced the movie screens, and we’re excited to see all of the different changes and innovations that will come with MEN IN BLACK: INTERNATIONAL. Oh Snap, This Men in Black Trailer Is Crazy MEN IN BLACK: INTERNATIONAL hits United States theatres at the height of summer, on June 14. That’s the same weekend as the latest SHAFT movie and zombie comedy THE DEAD DON’T DIE. But as this trailer shows, this movie offers its own unique pleasures and probably more funny action than those two films put together. Who’s Replacing Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith? [Credit: Columbia Pictures] How do you refresh a franchise that’s on its fourth outing and hasn’t been on screens for seven years? One smart way to do it is to cast brand-new stars whose stock is still on the rise. It also helps if said stars are key players in the Marvel universe. Taking over the fight from Agents J (Will Smith) and K (Tommy Lee Jones) are Agents M and H, played by Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth. Hemsworth is the strapping Australian best-known as buff Marvel deity Thor; Thompson made her Marvel debut in 2017 as super-powered warrior Valkyrie in THOR: RAGNAROK. She’s also appeared in DEAR WHITE PEOPLE, SORRY TO BOTHER YOU, the two CREED movies and the hit HBO series “Westworld.” The pair also appeared together in this spring’s AVENGERS: ENDGAME. Exactly How “International” Is the Story? Short version: MIB goes all over the world! The trailers give us a glimpse of Paris. The Union Jack in one scene, plus the presence of Emma Thompson’s Agent O, indicates that a good chunk of the movie is set in England. (Oscar®-winner Liam Neeson also plays someone affiliated with the MIB, named High T.) Tessa Thompson’s character has an American accent, and some of the plot involves her seeing aliens as a child, so it’s a good guess that at least some of the movie takes place in the United States. Once Agent M successfully joins the Men in Black, she and Agent H are sent to New York. But neither England nor the U.S. have the sort of expansive, dune-filled desert we see late in the second trailer, where H and M try out “the most powerful weapon in the galaxy … for fun.” So, we know the two MIB members put at least a few — and probably, as indicated by the INTERNATIONAL in the title, a lot — more miles in. What’s the Connection to the Original Men in Black? [Credit: Sony Pictures] MEN IN BLACK: INTERNATIONAL may or may not feature a cameo from some of the actors from the first three films. That’s still to be announced. But we do know that we’re looking at a movie that takes place in the same universe as the original MEN IN BLACK movies. That means that while this title features new leads, it isn’t a straight reboot. One of the trailers, after all, features a painting of Jones and Smith’s characters . Who Voices the Alien Sidekick? [Credit: Columbia Pictures] If you recognize the voice of the little alien who pledges allegiance to Agent M — his name is “Pawny,” by the way — it’s probably because you’ve seen either THE BIG SICK or HBO’s “Silicon Valley.” Voicing Pawny is Kumail Nanjiani, who co-wrote and starred in the former and played tech nerd Dinesh in the latter.
