We have seen J.R.R. Tolkien’s phenomenal works come alive in Peter Jackson’s epic trilogies, THE HOBBIT and THE LORD OF THE RINGS. But we’ve yet to see the story of the brilliant mind behind the masterpieces and how he dreamed up such magical worlds. On May 10, fans will finally get to meet the great fantasy author on the big screen in TOLKIEN. The bio-drama explores Tolkien’s formative years, from an orphaned schoolboy to an Oxford professor. Nicholas Hoult plays the title role, with Lily Collins as his muse and the love of his life, Edith Bratt. The story picks up after the loss of Tolkien’s father, the family taken in by Father Francis Xavier Morgan (Colm Meaney). Tolkien’s mother, before she passed, read fantastical stories of knights and dragons to him and his brother — imagery that burned into Tolkien’s subconscious. Throughout the film, we follow his journey, which flashes between his childhood and the Great War. As a kid, Tolkien found friendship and creative inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school — “the T.C.B.S.,” a brotherhood that vowed to change the world through art. From a young age, Tolkien loved to write and analyze language (and even make up his own). At the same time, he met Edith Bratt. We watch him, his friends and his future wife grow up together, but the breakout of World War I changes all of their lives. The battlefield scenes in TOLKIEN are the darkest, yet most foreshadowing (and visually fascinating). TOLKIEN is an incredibly emotional story filled with struggle and loss, love and friendship — all of which influenced Tolkien to write his famous Middle-Earth novels. The film is certainly worth the journey, especially if you’re a fan. Just don’t expect actual mythical beings. This is a biopic, after all.
