Robert Redford plays Jeremiah an ex-soldier from the Civil War. He has become disillusioned with the ways of his civilization and the ravages of war. He sets out determined to survive in the Rocky Mountain wilderness by himself. He eventually takes a squaw for a wife and loses her, because she is slaughtered by the Crow Indians. He defends himself against the Crow Indians and becomes a legend in his own time.
