CinemaCon 2023: Paramount Pictures Presents
One of the most wonderful things about the annual CinemaCon is that some presentations showcase films that movie lovers of all ages will be able to see when they arrive in theatres. Case in point, much of the presentation by Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Studios highlighted numerous films coming to AMC Theatres in 2023 and beyond that will appeal to families.
For instance, Rihanna was present at the convention in Las Vegas to promote the February 14, 2025 release of THE SMURFS MOVIE, for which she will lend her voice to the “little blue badass,” Smurfette. There is plenty more to cover in regards to what Paramount and Nickelodeon teased at CinemaCon and the following is your guide to all the big scoops.
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning, Part One
The spy movie genre has never been the same since star and producer Tom Cruise brought the classic 1960s TV series, “Mission: Impossible,” to big screen in the mid-1990s, kicking off one of the most enduring action franchises of the last few decades. Cruise and co. are coming back as Ethan Hunt and his trusted team for another death-defying mission in the series’ seventh installment, which is only the first half of one full, new story.
The CinemaCon 2023 crowd was treated with, not just a new trailer for MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – DEAD RECKONING, PART ONE, but a full, 20-minute clip of the film that sees Cruise and franchise newcomer Hayley Atwell hunted down in an intense chase. There is only more double-crossing intrigue and high-wire stunts to behold when director Christopher McQuarrie’s latest chapter in this adrenaline-pumping series hits theatres on July 14th.
Ninja Turtles, Transformers And More
The MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE movies are just one example of the many exciting, beloved properties returning to the big screen from Paramount soon. The studio’s presentation even began with a big, rousing promotion of the animated film, TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: MUTANT MAYHEM, complete with skateboarders grinding up and down a half-pipe in front of a screen showing the titular reptiles performing a dance routine. Producer Seth Rogen showed up to talk about what makes this reboot of the long-running franchise – coming out on August 4th – a special turning point, including casting actual teenagers as the pizza-loving heroes.
Speaking of popular children’s programs hitting the big screen, the voice of Optimus Prime introduced director Steven Caple Jr. and stars Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback from TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE BEASTS before presenting a new trailer for the ‘90s-set prequel, which comes out on June 9th. In July 19, 2024, however, Nickelodeon will put out the first animated movie in decades to star the popular shape-shifting aliens, which will feature an all-star voice cast including Scarlett Johansson, Laurence Fishburne, and Chris Hemsworth as a young Autonomous Prime.
Talk of returning franchises grew “quieter” when John Krasinski took the stage to promote a couple of new projects – one of them being a prequel to his hit 2018 horror movie, A QUIET PLACE. A teaser for director Michael Sarnoski’s A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE was shown that starred Academy AwardⓇ winner Lupita Nyong’o and featured more of the series’ unique sound design and haunting suspense. The thriller is currently set to come out on March 8, 2024.
Lily Gladstone in Killers of the Flower Moon
One of the most legendary figures in cinematic history, Martin Scorsese, was at CinemaCon to speak about KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON – his sixth movie with Leonardo DiCaprio, tenth with Robert De Niro, and (surprisingly) the first to star both OscarⓇ-winning icons together. However, our attention is especially fixated on Lily Gladstone, whose performance as Mollie Burkhart was teased in a special sneak peek during the presentation.
The Apple TV+ original film – which will be distributed to theatres by Paramount on October 20th – is based on a non-fiction book by David Grann that takes a deep look at America’s dark past via an FBI investigation of multiple murders of Osage tribe members in the 1920s. Scorsese talked about what it was like “bringing this story to life on an epic scale” with a film that boasts a tremendous ensemble cast and was “designed to be a big screen movie.”
Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Studios seem to have a bright future in front of them based on their upcoming projects teased at CinemaCon that are coming out beyond 2023 – such as the aforementioned THE SMURFS MOVIE and A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE. Also be sure to keep an eye out for writer and director John Krasinski’s family dramedy IMAGINARY FRIENDS (out March 24, 2024), the Kingsley Ben-Adir-led music biopic BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE, a third feature starring everyone’s favorite sea sponge called THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SEARCH FOR SQUAREPANTS heading to theatres in 2025, and a new theatrical installment spun-off from the popular animated series, “Avatar: The Last Airbender.”
