F9: Everything We Know (So Far)

It’s hard to believe that it was almost two full decades ago that THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS franchise was born, but the reality is that the brand has become one of the biggest in all of Hollywood. The last few installments have been some of the hugest hits of their respective release years, and things are only expanding thanks to spin-offs like last summer’s HOBBS & SHAW. Next up, though, fans will get to experience another taste of the main series with the forthcoming debut of F9.

But what do we know about this project? Who is involved? When can we see it? We have all of that information and more for you below, so read on and learn everything we know so far about F9.

F9 Release Date

Fast & Furious 9 Release Date

Usually there is at least one full year between installments of the FAST & FURIOUS franchise, and the studio is staying true to tradition with F9. You’ll be able to see the next chapter on the big screen on April 2, 2021, almost two years after the series’ spinoff, HOBBS & SHAW.

F9 Trailer

After months of anticipation and weeks of teasing, the first trailer for F9 launched on January 31 following a special concert hosted in celebration of the footage launch. While most trailers for movies clock in at about two and a half minutes, this one is about four minutes long, so strap in!

F9 Story

Fast & Furious 9 Story

The plot of F9 was kept as a closely guarded secret for a long time, and after watching the trailer it’s not hard at all to see why, as the first look at the blockbuster unloaded a shocking number of big twists. When we catch up with Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto in the new movie, he is trying to live a peaceful life as a father, with Michelle Rodriguez’s Letty as his wife. Unfortunately for him, this calm is shattered by the arrival of a key figure from Dom’s past: his brother, Jacob (John Cena), who has spent his entire life in the shadow of his sibling. The film will see Jacob join forces with THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS villain Cipher (Charlize Theron) as he plans Dom’s destruction.

F9 Director

Fast & Furious 9 Director

Justin Lin was THE director of the FAST & FURIOUS franchise for a considerable spell; between 2006 and 2013, he directed four installments in the franchise: THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS: TOKYO DRIFT, FAST & FURIOUS, FAST FIVE, AND FAST & FURIOUS 6. For a minute, Lin decided to step away from the helm to direct STAR TREK BEYOND while James Wan and F. Gary Gray directed FURIOUS 7 and THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS, respectively. But now Justin Lin is back in the driver’s seat for F9, and he’s also attached to direct the developing FAST & FURIOUS 10.

F9 Returning Stars

In the last 18 years, the cast of the FAST & FURIOUS franchise has changed a whole lot, but still there are many stars who keep coming back movie after movie. Vin Diesel, Jordana Brewster and Michelle Rodriguez are the only actors still playing their parts from the original film, but there are plenty of others who signed on for one of the sequels since and have repeatedly shown up in more installments — and it’s a pretty impressive list. Confirmed to be joining the aforementioned three in F9 are Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson, Helen Mirren, Nathalie Emmanuel, Lucas Black and Charlize Theron… but that’s not all. While we all thought for years that he was dead, having been murdered in a car crash by Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw, Sung Kang's Han will be featured in the new blockbuster.

F9 New Franchise Stars

It just wouldn’t be a new sequel in the FAST & FURIOUS franchise if F9 didn’t introduce some amazing new superstars to the ensemble cast, and the film definitely isn’t going to disappoint. Specifically, the franchise has brought on both John Cena and Michael Rooker to play roles in the blockbuster. We know that the latter is going to be playing a character named Buddy, and, as noted earlier, the former will have one of the most significant roles in the plot, serving as the new primary antagonist.

Be on the lookout for F9 when it hits AMC theatres in 2021.
