When you get a Friday or Saturday night off to spend with someone special, you probably want to go on some kind of adventure together. A good date night isn’t the time for a serious drama. You want a movie that is a little sexy or scary — something to bring you closer to that person you’ve been thinking about all week.
Here are the great date night movies to see in theatres this weekend and over the coming weeks.
Five Feet Apart
This is the tear-jerker selection. Two teenagers (Haley Lu Richardson and Cole Sprouse) who are coping with cystic fibrosis meet in the hospital and soon fall in love. They have serious differences in personality and their outlooks on life, but the biggest obstacle to their relationship is the fact that their illnesses force them to maintain a physical distance at all times. How can they live the lives they want when their conditions threaten their existence — and when they can’t even touch? (March 15)
A great date movie from the ’90s returns to theatres for its 20th anniversary! CRUEL INTENTIONS is set at Manchester Prep, where the wealthy and manipulative step-siblings Kathryn (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Sebastian (Ryan Phillippe) conspire in a competition of sexual conquest targeting the gentle Cecile (Selma Blair) and virginal Annette (Reese Witherspoon). Their game very much lives up to the film’s title, and it can’t possibly work out well for anyone involved. (March 22)
GET OUT director Jordan Peele creates excitement and chills with the story of a family whose vacation is disrupted by … themselves? The Wilson family (Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, Shahadi Wright Joseph and Evan Alex) heads to the beach. Things are pretty good at first, even when the youngest Wilson encounters a strange man dressed in red. Then, a red-robed quartet shows up in the driveway of the Wilson’s rented house. The newcomers all look exactly like each member of the Wilson family — and they have violence in their eyes. (March 22)
The Curse of La Llorona
A traditional Latin folktale inspired this creepy arm-clencher in which Linda Cardellini stars as Anna, a widow and social worker whose job brings her into contact with a family that seems to be haunted by the spirit of La Llorona, the “weeping woman” who steals children. As frightening as that is, Anna begins to realize that La Llorona may have set her sights on Anna’s children as well — can she possibly fight off an evil that has existed for decades? (April 19)
If you’re going to spend an evening with someone special, why not season the date with nostalgia? Will Smith stars as Genie, Mena Massoud plays Aladdin, and Naomi Scott is Princess Jasmine in this live-action version of Disney’s classic 1992 animated film. There are new characters, more action and additional songs in the retelling of a power struggle in which the ambitious and nefarious Jafar (Marwan Kenzari) attempts to overthrow the Sultan of Agrabah, but is countered by the Sultan’s daughter, Jasmine; her suitor, Aladdin; and a powerful, strange and blue Genie. (May 24)
