When you get a Friday or Saturday night off to spend with someone special, you probably want to go on some kind of adventure together. A good date night isn’t the time for a serious drama. You want a movie that is a little sexy or scary — something to bring you closer to that person you’ve been thinking about all week.
Here are the great date night movies to see in theatres this weekend and over the coming weeks.
Matthew McConaughey plays Baker Dill, who just wants to run his fishing business on the remote Plymouth Island. Then, his ex-wife, Karen (Anne Hathaway), shows up asking Baker to kill her current husband (Jason Clarke) — and Baker seems to go for it. We don’t know who is going to end up dead, but at least one of the three is in for a nasty end, in this twisted and unpredictable thriller from writer-director Steven Knight (“Taboo,” “Peaky Blinders”). (January 25)
GET OUT director Jordan Peele creates excitement and chills with the story of a family whose vacation is disrupted by … themselves? The Wilson family (Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, Shahadi Wright Joseph and Evan Alex) heads to the beach. Things are pretty good at first, even when the youngest Wilson encounters a strange man dressed in red. Then, a red-robed quartet shows up in the driveway of the Wilson’s rented house. The newcomers all look exactly like each member of the Wilson family — and they have violence in their eyes. (March 22)
Five Feet Apart
This is the tear-jerker selection. Two teenagers (Haley Lu Richardson and Cole Sprouse) who are coping with cystic fibrosis meet in the hospital and soon fall in love. They have serious differences in personality and their outlooks on life, but the biggest obstacle to their relationship is the fact that their illnesses force them to maintain a physical distance at all times. How can they live the lives they want when their conditions threaten their existence — and when they can’t even touch? (March 22)
