Fall is always an excellent season for smart and exciting thrillers, and it looks like this year we will be getting one in the form of writer/director Lorene Scafaria's HUSTLERS. Not only does the movie have a fantastic based-on-a-true-story plot — centering on a group of strip club employees who work to bilk their rich Wall Street clients out of thousands — but it has come together with an absolutely outstanding ensemble cast.
Tickets are now on sale to see HUSTLERS, opening September 13, and here we have a breakdown of all of the impressive stars that will be conning and thieving on the big screen next month.
In addition to being an award-winning recording artist, Jennifer Lopez has been a big feature film star since her big breakout role as the titular singer in 1997's SELENA, and she continues to take on interesting projects. In HUSTLERS, she will be playing Ramona, a veteran stripper who essentially orchestrates the scam that she and her colleagues wind up running.
Up until recently, Constance Wu has been best known for her small screen work, particularly her starring role on the hit series “Fresh Off the Boat.” But she is becoming a bigger and bigger feature star. This new era of her career began last year with the release of CRAZY RICH ASIANS, and she will soon be seen as Destiny, the protagonist of HUSTLERS, who is a rookie stripper taken under Ramona’s wing.
HUSTLERS is based on a New York Magazine article titled “The Hustlers at Scores,” so there is a meta quality to the role being played by Julia Stiles, a journalist who is writing about the main characters. It doesn’t appear that Stiles is specifically playing the actual journalist who wrote the piece, Jessica Pressler, as her role has been identified as Elizabeth. But even so, Pressler can still be happy that her part in the story is being played by the talented star of movies like 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU and the BOURNE trilogy.
Jennifer Lopez isn’t the only multimedia star in the HUSTLERS cast, as singer Keke Palmer is also part of the ensemble playing Mercedes, another one of Ramona’s associates. Palmer, of course, has been a big-screen presence for a long time now, notably playing the titular role in AKEELAH AND THE BEE when she was 11 years old. More recently, she has been doing a lot of TV projects, including "Scream: The TV Series," "Star" and "Berlin Station."
You may not know Lili Reinhart from her big screen work just yet, but she has a massive following thanks to her key role as Betty Cooper on the hit television series “Riverdale.” That very well could change with the release of HUSTLERS, though, in which she will be playing a key member of the core team.
Here we have another multi-hyphenate adding to the impressive star power of HUSTLERS. Cardi B is one of the biggest recording artists in the world, and now she’s expanding her career in the acting world. She has done some television before, but the new film will actually be her first time acting in a movie, and it will have her playing a character named Diamond.
Coming off her voice performance in UGLYDOLLS, Lizzo is another singer-cum-actress who is making her live-action feature film debut with HUSTLERS. Her music has been featured in a whole lot of projects in recent years, with tracks like "Good as Hell" and "Worship" playing on the soundtracks of titles like GIRLS TRIP, STEP SISTERS and BLOCKERS, but now she’ll be getting in front of the camera to play Liz in Lorene Scafaria's movie.
HUSTLERS will be in AMC theatres on September 13, and tickets are on sale now, so get yours.
