Major 2024 Movie Anniversaries
2024 is right around the corner, and there are some films that are celebrating some major movie anniversaries next year. From MEAN GIRLS to THE GODFATHER PART II, these are the movies that are turning 10, 15… all the way to 50.
10 Year Anniversary
2014 was certainly a huge year for movies. While Christopher Nolan released his epic space-drama INTERSTELLAR, Disney began remaking the stories of classic villains with the first MALEFICENT movie.
Marvel introduced fans to not only the most hilarious characters of space in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, but also introduced the Winter Soldier in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER. Book lovers, mainly readers who love John Greene, also got the chance to laugh and cry when THE FAULT IN OUR STARS released. But the one film that must be highlighted is DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES.
Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes
The second film it the new PLANET OF THE APES trilogy, DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES continued to follow Caesar’s story after RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, this time in the forests of California as his ape society grew into a civilization that faces off against humans once the virus has knocked out a good portion of the planet.
Now, with a new trilogy beginning with the release of KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES during Memorial Day Weekend 2024, now is the perfect time to revisit DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES.
15 Year Anniversary
2009 offered some excellent films that are all turning fifteen in 2024. There’s the Academy Award®-winning THE BLIND SIDE, as well Disney’s 2D animated movie, THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG. Pixar’s UP was also released and made audiences cry everywhere.
Quentin Tarantino released INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, and CORALINE made waves as one of the best new stop-motion films. But 2009 was also a great year for cinematic history – as that’s when AVATAR released.
Avatar
AVATAR was directed by James Cameron and told the story of Jake Sully, a disabled army member who enters into the body of a man of the Na’vi, a humanoid species in order to explore the planet of Pandora, a place the humans hope to conquer as Earth’s natural resources have depleted.
The film was revolutionary at the time for its visual effects and 3D capabilities, and more than a decade later in 2022, a sequel was released, AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER.
20 Year Anniversary
2024 will mark twenty years since 2004, which saw the release of several iconic movies. The film adaptation of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA came out, starring Emmy Rossum and Gerard Butler. Zack Snyder’s remake of DAWN OF THE DEAD released, as well as the romance film, THE NOTEBOOK, starring Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling. McAdams, however, also starred in another successful film that year — MEAN GIRLS.
Mean Girls
Starring Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, and more, MEAN GIRLS was the teen comedy of the 2000s, following the story of a teenager who goes undercover to take down her new school’s mean girls, otherwise known as The Plastics — but winds up becoming one herself.
The film became an instant hit, shot stars up to fame, and was turned into a musical by Tina Fey, which itself is receiving a 2024 film adaptation, simply titled MEAN GIRLS.
25 Year Anniversary
1999 was a great year for film, with movies such as THE IRON GIANT and THE SIXTH SENSE coming out, but there is one movie that stands above the rest for this twenty-five year anniversary – that’s right, FIGHT CLUB.
Fight Club
Directed by David Fincher, and based on a novel by Chuck Palahniuk, FIGHT CLUB is about a man starting up a secret fight club with a buddy of his, but the story itself is unlike anything anyone has ever seen – with a twist that shook audiences minds.

30 Year Anniversary
1994 released some of the biggest classics that we still watch to this day, like THE LION KING, FORREST GUMP, and of course, PULP FICTION, all released 30 years ago, but the movie that has to get talked about is THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION.
The Shawshank Redemption
The film, starring Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins is based on the Stephen King novella, “Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption,” and follows the story of a man falsely accused of killing his wife, and the years he spends in prison during the 20th century. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards®.
40 Year Anniversary
Forty years ago in 1984, some of the biggest films ever were released. INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM, THE TERMINATOR, THE KARATE KID, BEVERLY HILLS COP and A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET all came out during this time, many of which have sparked franchises and quotes galore.
However, another great film was released, and that was GHOSTBUSTERS.
Ghostbusters
Starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Rick Moranis and Harold Ramis, GHOSTBUSTERS is a comedy film about parapsychologists who start a ghost-catching business. The film was immensely successful, and spawned a franchise, with a new film, GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE, releasing in 2024.
50 Year Anniversary
1974 was fifty years ago, and movies such as CHINATOWN, MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE and BLAZING SADDLES all came out. But the one that’s highlighted now is THE GODFATHER: PART II.
The Godfather Part II
The sequel to THE GODFATHER, this movie was the first sequel to ever win Best Picture at the Academy Awards. THE GODFATHER PART II tells the story of Vito Corleone as well as continues the story of Michael Corleone, and was nominated for eleven Academy Awards.
There are plenty of other films that came out that are celebrating major anniversaries, but these are just some of the best, and truthfully, it’s a great time to revisit th
