"I want a ride or die. As long as my lady remembers me fondly, that’s all I need."
This single line, from the QUEEN & SLIM trailer, gives us a good idea of what's to come in the new drama that joins such films as SET IT OFF and THELMA & LOUISE.
A black man (Daniel Kaluuya) and black woman (Jodie Turner-Smith) become the new Bonnie and Clyde after an unremarkable date leads to the fatal shooting of a police officer. Now on the run, this fresh couple forms a deep and powerful bond while the rest of the country is divided over their actions.
With themes of racism, violence and love, QUEEN & SLIM is a consciousness-raising story you will want to experience on the big screen. Before the film arrives in theatres on November 27, get to know the two leads and their paths to each other.
Though he's been acting for more than a decade, Daniel Kaluuya got his big break in 2017 with Jordan Peele's horror GET OUT. Daniel played the lead role of Chris, a young African-American man who visits his white girlfriend's parents for the weekend. What starts as an awkward encounter turns into lucid nightmare, with Chris in the fight of his life. His performance was so visceral, he earned his first Oscar® nomination for Best Actor.
The following year, he landed the role of W'Kabi in the groundbreaking BLACK PANTHER. With QUEEN & SLIM, Daniel will step back into the lead position alongside fairly newcomer Jodie Turner-Smith.
The British actress has been flying under the radar in the movie industry, appearing in only a couple of indie films, THE NEON DEMON (2016) and LEMON (2017). Most of her work so far has been in shorts and TV series, including "True Blood" (her acting debut in 2013) and "Nightflyers."
Jodie Turner-Smith was actually discovered by Pharrell Williams at an N.E.R.D. concert. At the time, she wanted to be a writer, but Pharrell told her she needed to be in front of the camera. He pulled a few strings, and a month later, Jodie moved to Los Angeles to become a model.
QUEEN & SLIM will be her first lead movie role, and she is already slated for two movies in 2020: AFTER YANG alongside Colin Farrell and WITHOUT REMORSE with Michael B. Jordan.
