For the past couple of years, AMC Theatres has hosted its Celebration of Juneteenth program, a special presentation of several high-profile and award-winning movies from African American filmmakers like Spike Lee, Denzel Washington and Barry Jenkins, as well as actors like Michael B. Jordan and the late Chadwick Boseman. The special event is returning yet again in honor of Juneteenth 2023, with two movies returning with special presentations and pricing.
Between June 9th and June 14, Stephen Williams’ CHEVALIER and A.V. Rockwell’s A THOUSAND AND ONE will return to participating AMC Theatres locations with $5 Fan Faves pricing throughout the weeklong event.
But, before you check to see if your local theatre is taking part in the Juneteenth program, here is some information on the collection of titles you can watch as part of this incredible event.
A little less than two months after the world got to see Kelvin Harrison Jr. take on the role of Joseph Bologne in Stephen Williams’ AMC Artisan Film, CHEVALIER, the biographical drama about the 18th-century violin virtuoso is returning to the big screen as part AMC Theatres Juneteenth 2023 celebration. This is great news for those who missed out on the film’s initial run, as well as for those who want to see the magical story about the trailblazing musician who had a prominent position in the court of Marie Antoinette.
The movie, which brings a unique vision and perspective to the biographical drama genre, follows Joseph Bologne as he goes from being the child of an enslaved woman and her owner to one of the most talented and impactful musicians of the classical era. By pushing boundaries and sparking conversation, much like the historical figure at the center of its story, the movie sets out to tell audiences a story that is often overlooked in the history books.
In March 2023, A.V. Rockwell made her directorial debut with A THOUSAND AND ONE, an AMC Theatres hidden gem showing how far a mother will go to be with, and protect, her son. Now, just a few months later, audiences will get a second chance to see the movie featuring Teyana Taylor’s incredible portrayal of a New York City mother who kidnaps her son from the foster system to make a better life for him as well as herself. Whether you missed the movie the first time around or simply want to watch it again, now’s your golden opportunity to see A THOUSAND AND ONE on the big screen.
Told over the course of 15 years, the film follows the loving yet tumultuous story of Inez de La Paz (Teyana Taylor) and her son, Terry (portrayed at different ages by Aaron Kingsley Adetola, Aven Courtney and Josiah Cross), as they slowly build up trust in one another while keeping a secret from pretty much everyone in their lives. In addition to diving into the unbreakable bond shared by a mother and her child, the movie also explores how New York City has changed over the course of the past couple of decades. You could argue that the main characters in A THOUSAND AND ONE are Inez, Terry, and the Big Apple, as the “City that Never Sleeps” is treated more like a person experiencing its own journey than a backdrop or setting where the story takes place.
Both of these movies will be returning to the big screen for a limited engagement as part of AMC’s Juneteenth Celebration from Friday, June 9th to Thursday, June 14th. Make sure to check local listings to find out when and where you can see CHEVALIER and A THOUSAND AND ONE on the big screen and celebrate Black actors and filmmakers as part of this special presentation brought to you by AMC Theatres.
