The world would never look at the most notorious criminal in Gotham City the same way after the release of JOKER in 2019. While not a direct adaptation of the origin story for Batman’s arch nemesis – whose mysterious backstory has always been treated as, to quote Alan Moore’s “The Killing Joke,” “multiple choice” – the unique comic book movie used the concept of the Clown Prince of Crime as a jumping off point to craft a bleak and moving story of a lonely aspiring comedian’s descent into madness. After grossing more than $1 billion dollars worldwide and earning two Academy AwardsⓇ, it was only a matter of time before we saw the return of Arthur Fleck in JOKER: FOLIE À DEUX.
The highly anticipated 2024 Artisan Film, which comes to AMC Theatres on October 4, picks up where JOKER left off when Arthur was arrested for the murder of talk show host Murray Franklin (Robert De Niro), which ended up making him a hero in the eyes of many who led violent riot in Gotham. However, he is not alone in the big house as he will finally find the unexpected hope and kinship he needs. Let’s take a peek at what we know about the upcoming DC movie, JOKER: FOLIE À DEUX.
The sequel takes place at Gotham City’s local mental institution, Arkham, where Arthur Fleck awaits trial for his horrific crimes as his alter ego, Joker. Yet, just when things could not look worse for the former clown and failed comedian, he experiences the one thing that he has been missing his entire life when he meets a fellow patient named Harley Quinn. The mad love she and Arthur share changes his worldview, gives him the joy he craves, and brings out the music that has been living dormant inside him.
The JOKER: FOLIE À DEUX cast also includes Brendan Gleeson, the Academy Award-nominated star of THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN and HARRY POTTER’s Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody, in his comic book movie debut. Fellow Oscar nominee Catherine Keener of CAPOTE and GET OUT fame also joins this bleak world, while “Atlanta” and DEADPOOL 2 star Zazie Beetz returns to it in the role of Sophie Dumond, whom Arthur imagined he was sharing a romance with in the original film.
Additionally, Phillips has a producing credit, alongside Emma Tillinger Koskoff and Joseph Garner. Executive producers include Michael E. Uslan – who has served as an EP for every Warner Bros. movie related to Batman since Tim Burton’s 1989 classic – Georgia Kacandes, Scott Silver, Mark Friedberg, and Jason Rudner.

The teaser opens on a bit of a bittersweet note with Arthur Fleck being transported to a courthouse to face judgment for his crimes and audio of Phoenix singing “When You’re Smiling” drops over the soundtrack as a crowd of Joker supporters surround him. Things take an interesting turn when we meet Gaga’s Harley Quinn, who shares elaborate, surreal, and eye-popping fantasies with Arthur in which they are seen singing, dancing, and hosting a variety show a la “Sonny and Cher.” There are still many flashes of the same dark and gritty tone that JOKER is known for but the sequel looks to be a brighter and more visually entrancing experience.
