There's nothing quite like watching a great horror movie. The best can shake a person to their emotional core, and the experience is only heightened when the film is a smaller title that seemingly came out of nowhere. These types of movies are special examples of the power of cinema, and we have a number of excellent ones currently available to watch on AMC Theatres On Demand.
A Quiet Place
Prior to 2018, audiences were primarily familiar with John Krasinski from his time playing Jim Halpert on "The Office," but everything changed with the release of A QUIET PLACE. Serving as both director and star, Krasinski totally terrified us with a special story about a family living in a post-apocalyptic world — specifically, one overrun by violent extraterrestrials with powerful auditory senses. It’s a chilling and amazing movie that can be enjoyed again and again.
Get Out
There aren’t a lot of filmmakers that can say they helmed an instant classic as their directorial debut, but Jordan Peele is most definitely one of those people. GET OUT is a truly phenomenal film, as it not only manages to weave a legitimately frightening story with incredible thematic resonance, but it’s also one of the most deeply layered and detailed movies to hit theatres in the modern era. It’s a special piece of work.
The Blair Witch Project
THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT is particularly notable in pop culture history just because of the way in which it managed to convince audiences prior to its theatrical release that it was actually real. But what’s far more important to note is that it’s actually just a really great movie. It’s an arguably revolutionary feature because of the creation of the "found footage" genre, and it also happens to still be incredibly scary 21 years later.
Saw
Alongside FRIDAY THE 13TH, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET and HALLOWEEN, the SAW franchise stands as one of the most influential horror brands in the history of the slasher subgenre. While the sequels are filled with some excellent moments, the best installment is hands down director James Wan’s original. Made for a super low budget, the movie is based on a simple setup, with two strangers waking up to find themselves chained up in a disgusting bathroom. But the twists and turns are epic, and the scares are impressive.
