THE CREATOR opens September 29th
Gareth Edwards, the visionary director best known for films like GODZILLA and ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY, will soon unveil to the world his most recent project, the long-awaited sci-fi thriller, THE CREATOR. The movie stars John David Washington as a soldier tasked with finding and killing the architect of a powerful advanced artificial intelligence that is at war with humankind. The story will explore a multitude of themes that have become staples of the genre over the years.
When THE CREATOR opens at AMC Theatres locations nationwide later this month, it could very well assume a spot on the list of best sci-fi movies of the 21st century. And if that ends up being the case, it might just be the movie’s unique and powerful AI child, an advanced and potentially dangerous world-ending weapon, that does the trick. But what’s so special about the child? Let’s find out from Edwards himself…
Ahead of the film’s release, director Gareth Edwards sat with CinemaBlend’s Sean O’Connell to discuss multiple aspects of the sci-fi action thriller, including how the AI works, and what sets the child (Madeleine Yuna Voyles) apart from the other AI in THE CREATOR. In the world in which Edwards created for the film, he describes the AI as “copy-paste,” in that a human brain is scanned and a copy is printed. What this does, as the director put it, is that it creates “essentially a snapshot of a person at some point” since it’s copying the brain of a living person – someone who experienced things and had thoughts.
But from what the director says, it’s a completely different ballgame when it comes to the AI child at the center of THE CREATOR. “The unique thing about this child is that they figured out how to grow AI from the beginning, and so, essentially, she’s going to supersede everything,” Edwards revealed, adding, “So she’s the thing that everyone’s always feared is going to become… basically supersede mankind.”
The concept of a unique, powerful, and smart artificial intelligence that has the capability to react to its surroundings, learn from those around them, and evolve based on those calculations is either terrifying or awe-inspiring depending on your outlook on technology, and that seems to be a major part of THE CREATOR and its approach to sci-fi.
Just like a real child, the highly sought after AI in THE CREATOR is a being that continues to grow smarter and more powerful over time, constantly evolving in a multitude of ways. As Gareth Edwards put it, “She has the ability at the beginning of the movie to just control a few things if they’re technologically based, like changing channels on TV and things like this.” The director also teased that the advanced artificial intelligence will eclipse that by the time the movie is finished.
Without giving too much away about what goes down later on in the film, Edwards explained that “as we journey with her, you can start to see she’s learning and figuring out and getting more powerful.” Though he stopped short of revealing exactly where the child’s powers take her, as well as John David Washington’s character, Joshua, during their time together, it’s not too difficult to imagine a scenario in which the young android unleashes her full potential.
