Historical biopics are a window into conflicts and moments in time that the general public may not be well-versed in. THE CURRENT WAR – DIRECTOR’S CUT is one such film, and after a delay of almost two years since it was initially supposed to be released, it will now have its day in theatres all over — which is fantastic, because the story that director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s film follows is one that affects our everyday life: the moment when the future of electricity was cemented.
In THE CURRENT WAR – DIRECTOR’S CUT, three men are fighting for their place in the history books. On one side, you have underdogs George Westinghouse (Michael Shannon) and genius Nikola Tesla (Nicholas Hoult), who believe in the alternating current method of power delivery, known as AC for short. Opposing their best efforts is the wizard of Menlo Park himself, titan of scientific discovery Thomas Edison (Benedict Cumberbatch), whose direct current method has its own ups and downs.
This battle, known as the “war of the currents,” saw itself fought on all grounds imaginable, and the men involved used everything from smear campaigns and charisma to scientific knowledge and schmoozing, with well-known investors like J.P. Morgan (Matthew Macfadyen) getting into the mix. Accusations were made, claims were debunked, and the Chicago World's Fair of 1893 was the final stand that decided the eventual victor.
And what was it all for? Well, whoever wins the war that’s depicted in THE CURRENT WAR – DIRECTOR’S CUT basically defines electricity itself. Both alternating and direct current had their drawbacks and benefits, but only one could win when it came to giving the nation its electrical supply. Every victory and setback had this massive undertaking in the balance, and while we won’t spoil the results for you, as THE CURRENT WAR – DIRECTOR’S CUT should have the honor of telling this story, you can see that a lot of history is about to unfold in this film.
The modern world we live in today could have been extremely different, depending on the outcome of this battle of the minds. And you’ll see why once you see the film at an AMC theatre near you.
