Since 1996 there have been three constants in the SCREAM franchise that have thrilled fans and always leaving them guessing who was behind the mask. The first constant, has been the director Wes Craven, who unfortunately is not involved with the fifth installment. However, fans of the cult film READY OR NOT will be ecstatic to learn that Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will directing SCREAM. The second constant within the franchise has been our heroic threesome of Sidney, Gale and Dewey and we cannot wait to see this triple threat in action again solving the mystery of Ghostface. Finally, the third constant has been the horrifying masked symbol of revenge, jealousy and murder, Ghostface. Now the killers may have been different from movie to movie, but the infamous mask has been constant.
As you begin to contemplate the “rules of horror films” with the release SCREAM, there are three elements that will make the fifth installment an AMC Thrills and Chills fan favorite.
A Clean Blade
In 2019, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett directed READY OR NOT, an action, comedy horror movie starring Samara Weaving and Adam Brody. The thrilling satire has had fans wanting more from this creative duo, and now they will be taking on the challenging of bringing a new, clean take to Ghostface and the characters, Sidney, Gale and Dewey. The directors will be teaming up again with writer Guy Busick, who co-wrote READY OR NOT and fellow screenwriter, James Vanderbilt.
A Dangerous Family
Over the course of four decades Sidney, Gale and Dewey have become an on-screen ”family” of survivors and heroes in the town of Woodsboro. Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette all are returning for the fifth installment as the legendary characters face a group of suspects that could be behind the mask. In a recent interview with TOTAL FILM, Arquette mentions uniting with with Cox, “I always love working with Courteney. There's an intangible quality of having a relationship with somebody, and then being able to act with them, that you kind of can't act. It's like the Everly Brothers singing harmonies – there's a real beauty to the relationship that you can't really fake."
New Blood
One of the most recognizable images in the horror genre is the Ghostface mask. For the last 25 years, Ghostface has been haunting Sindey, Gale and Dewey and the revolving supporting cast from each film. From the poster, the fifth installment will not disappoint in providing fans new and fresh faces that will keep us on the edge or our seat. Joining the original cast this time will be Melissa Barrera from IN THE HEIGHTS and stepping from the small screen to the big screen will be Jack Quaid, Jenna Ortega and Dylan Minnette. Will one of these new cast members be Ghostface or could it be someone that we have come to know as family?
Grab your friends and reserve your seat for this AMC Thrills and Chills movie and discover the shocking truth of the killer behind the Ghostface mask in SCREAM.
