Viggo Mortensen Spills His Guts For David Cronenberg

Remind Me CRIMES OF THE FUTURE opens June 3rd

There are a number of powerhouse actor-director combinations in Hollywood’s history, from Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese to Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. Their collaborations are legendary. To that list, we’d definitely add Canadian filmmaker David Cronenberg (THE FLY, CRASH) and his frequent leading man Viggo Mortensen. After a trio of films, the storytellers are reteaming this year for their fourth feature, this one a science-fiction horror study titled CRIMES OF THE FUTURE.

The David Cronenberg movie is set to hold its world premiere at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, but the director pit-stopped in Las Vegas before that to introduce a chilling trailer at the CinemaCon 2022 exhibition, where theatre executives preview upcoming films they will be able to bring to their multiplexes. And based on what we saw in this first CRIMES OF THE FUTURE footage, Cronenberg is rekindling his fascination with body horror, exploring the gory details that make us tick.

Viggo Mortensen Bares His Insides… Literally

In CRIMES OF THE FUTURE, society lives in a synthetic environment, and physical pain no longer is a thing that people feel. Capitalizing on this reality, Saul Tenser (Mortensen) invites audiences to his captivating performance art, where he and his assistant Caprice (Lea Seydoux, NO TIME TO DIE) experiment on his internal organs, for all to see. It’s as intense as you might imagine. Add to that an investigator played by Kristen Stewart, who is working for a group known as The National Organ Registry, and you know that Cronenberg is ready to dig deep into the twisted fascination he has with biology.

Cronenberg has built a spectacular career scratching this particular itch. Look at the ways that he analyzed body transformations with Jeff Goldblum in THE FLY, or with Ralph Fiennes in the 2002 mystery thriller SPIDER. But the upcoming CRIMES OF THE FUTURE stands out to us because it once again teams Cronenberg with Viggo Mortensen, and these two tend to bring out the best in each other.

Cronenberg’s Films With Viggo Mortensen

While David Cronenberg has dabbled in provocative body horror in the past, his films with Viggo Mortensen have explored a different genre —- that of the crime drama. Their partnership began with A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, where the LORD OF THE RINGS star played a diner owner who stands up to two robbers, and creates massive problems for his family.

The two apparently had such a good time, they upped the game for EASTERN PROMISES, a dark European thriller that imagined Mortensen as the strong-arm of a Russian gang, who assists a midwife (Naomi Watts) after she delivers a baby and gets on the bad side of some evildoers. They could have stayed in this proverbial lane and told a string of creative gangster films, like Guy Ritchie and Jason Statham. But they branched off and did the period piece A DANGEROUS METHOD, and now will take a stab at CRIMES OF THE FUTURE.

We are excited because David Cronenberg’s CRIMES OF THE FUTURE is coming to theatres exclusively, so audiences who want to see the latest from these innovative storytellers will need to get tickets to the film.
