The king returned to the big screen last weekend, and fans flocked to theatres to witness his majesty in stunning CG animation. Disney’s THE LION KING reimagining, directed by Jon Favreau (THE JUNGLE BOOK), broke numerous records with its $185 million debut.
First, THE LION KING surpassed HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS – PART 2 to deliver the highest-grossing weekend in the month of July. Looking back at the same weekend last year, THE LION KING earned more on its own than all of the titles combined.
Because THE LION KING is in fact an animated film — though the characters we know and love look as realistic as possible — it also claimed the record for largest animated feature opening, topping INCREDIBLES 2 by a few million.
In addition to the incredible visuals, the all-star voice cast likely drew audiences in, with Donald Glover, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, Seth Rogen and more in leading roles. AMC sat down with a few of the stars and director Jon Favreau to discuss the revamped story and score, written by original composer Hans Zimmer. Hear from them in our exclusive interview below.
THE LION KING debut is the second largest opening of the year so far and seventh largest of all time. The film's release in 4,725 locations was also a record, the largest ever for a PG-rated film.
