From the very beginning of STAR WARS, George Lucas envisioned an epic tale which would span across multiple feature films, even at a time long before sequels were any kind of guarantee. Shortly after the shocking success of A NEW HOPE in 1977, Lucas confirmed he had an expanded narrative planned, with a predicted completion date of 2001.
The franchise is nearly 20 years behind on that prediction, but it's now set to be completed with STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER arriving in theatres worldwide on December 20.
Audiences have been on a long journey with the franchise, complicated by the fact that the saga began with what turned out to be the fourth chapter. And as a result, it’s totally legitimate to be somewhat confused by the entirety of the timeline. After all, the whole thing is set in a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, and even with some significant time jumps between the sequels, the movies have never made it a huge priority to inform fans about the precise amount of time that has passed.
With the Skywalker Saga coming to an end this month with STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER, now seems like the perfect time to use our AMC Theatres On Demand service to properly reflect on the full breadth of the STAR WARS franchise, using STAR WARS: EPISODE I – THE PHANTOM MENACE as year zero.
