The world’s favorite hero is racing back into theatres December 19. In their most thrilling adventure yet, Sonic, Knuckles and Tails reunite against a mysterious adversary with unbelievable powers. Before you see it opening weekend, get to know the ensemble voice cast behind the characters, new and old.
Ben Schwartz is back as the titular character, Sonic. He voiced the super speedy protagonist in both SONIC THE HEDGEHOG and SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2, bringing the hero’s famous attitude to the big screen. In the upcoming film, Sonic will face off against a new foe — one with abilities that rival his own.
No stranger to fast action, Keanu Reeves joins the franchise as fan-favorite Shadow the Hedgehog. Shadow’s introduction was teased in a post-credits scene in SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2, when we first heard of “Project Shadow.” The vengeful antagonist shares many of the same abilities as Sonic, and their battle is bound to be one of the fiercest we’ve seen yet.
Knuckles, voiced by Idris Elba, was introduced in SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 as villain Dr. Robotnik’s partner. But after the mad scientist betrayed him, Knuckles teamed up with Sonic and Tails to reclaim the Master Emerald and restore order to the world. The echidna warrior fights enemies using brute force, but is he strong enough to go hand-to-hand with the powerful Shadow?
In a mid-credits scene in the first film, a two-tailed fox appeared from a ring portal on Earth, looking for Sonic. This was our first glimpse at Tails, voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey. Tails played a significant role in SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2, warning Sonic about Dr. Robotnik and Knuckles’ plans and helping defeat them. Tails will be right by the hero’s side again in SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3.
Not all of the cast are anthropomorphic animals. Jim Carrey returns as the mad scientist (and Sonic’s arch-nemesis), Dr. Robotnik, who will stop at nothing to achieve world domination. Carrey also plays a new character: Professor Gerald Robotnik, Dr. Robotnik’s grandfather and Shadow’s creator.
James Marsden reprises his role as Green Hills sheriff Tom Wachowski. Tika Sumpter is also back as Maddie Wachowski, the town’s veterinarian and Tom’s wife. Tom and Maddie became parental figures to Sonic in the first film. In SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2, they welcomed Knuckles and Tails into their family.
