Meet The Cast Of Wonka
WONKA opens December 15
Directed by Paul King, WONKA is finally arriving at AMC Theatres, and the anticipated movie boasts a great cast of characters. The movie is based on the character of Willy Wonka in the Roald Dahl book, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," and tells the origin story of the candymaker. WONKA features many talented actors and actresses that movie lovers everywhere know and love.
From Timothée Chalamet in the lead role to Hugh Grant to Sally Hawkins, here is the cast WONKA and who they’re playing.
Timothée Chalamet
First up on the WONKA cast is Timothée Chalamet, who will be playing the titular character, Willy Wonka himself. From the first trailer for WONKA, Chalamet captured our attention with the intriguing glimpses we’ve gotten of his portrayal of the eccentric character.
Chalamet has appeared in various movies before WONKA, including CALL ME BY YOUR NAME (which earned him a nomination for Best Actor at the Academy Awards® in 2018), LADY BIRD, BEAUTIFUL BOY, INTERSTELLAR, BONES AND ALL, LITTLE WOMEN, and more. He also was the star of the 2021 hit DUNE and will star in DUNE PART 2, releasing in March.
Hugh Grant
Hugh Grant has appeared in many movies over the last few decades, and in WONKA he will be playing an Oompa-Loompa, a character that most people know is a helper of Willy Wonka in his chocolate factory.
Grant has appeared in several films that have garnered him critical acclaim. These include, but aren't limited to, PADDINGTON 2, FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS, CLOUD ATLAS, THE GENTLEMEN, NOTTING HILL, TWO WEEKS NOTICE, FOUR WEDDING AND A FUNERAL and more. The actor has also appeared on television, most notably with his role in the HBO miniseries "The Undoing."
Rowan Atkinson
Rowan Atkinson is portraying Father Julius in WONKA, a priest who’s seen in a church in the trailer for Wonka – and also happens to get chased by a giraffe. The actor will surely make a splash with his character. Movie lovers most likely know Atkinson from his time playing the lead roles in sitcoms like "Blackadder" and "Mr. Bean," but the actor has also appeared in various films.
He portrayed Mr. Bean again in the movies BEAN and MR. BEAN'S HOLIDAY, but aside from that, he also appeared in movies such as FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL, LOVE ACTUALLY, NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN, and more. Atkinson is well-known for his fantastic voiceover role as Zazu in the Disney classic THE LION KING. It’ll be exciting to see what he brings to his role in WONKA.
Sally Hawkins
In WONKA, Sally Hawkins will play Mamma, Wonka's mother. Hawkins has appeared in various movies, many of which have earned her critical acclaim. One of her most known features is THE SHAPE OF WATER, directed by Guillermo del Toro, which earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress.
Aside from that, Hawkins also appeared in movies such as Cassandra's DREAM, BLUE JASMINE, PADDINGTON and PADDINGTON 2, HAPPY-GO-LUCKY and VERA DRAKE, among many others. In 2021, she was a part of the supporting cast of the film SPENCER.
Tom Davis
Tom Davis will play Bleacher in WONKA, an inn owner who – per Radio Times – tricks Wonka into working for him and his co-owner of the hotel, Mrs. Scrubbit. Like a few others on this list, the actor has also appeared in PADDINGTON 2 but has had roles in movies such as ALL THINGS TO ALL MEN, THE BAD EDUCATION MOVIE, FREE FIRE, and PREVENGE.
Davis is primarily known for his role in the TV show, "Murder in Successville" and the British comedy, "King Gary," where he played the lead role, Gary King.
Jim Carter
Jim Carter plays Abacus Crunch in WONKA, a man who warns Wonka of the difficulty of selling chocolate in this city due to the “Chocolate Cartel,” as seen in the trailer. He has been in the business for a while. Carter gained much fame as Mr. Carson in the hit TV show, "Downton Abbey," which he reprised in both film spin-offs, DOWNTON ABBEY and DOWNTON ABBEY: A NEW ERA.
Carter appeared in movies such as THE COMPANY OF WOLVES, ELLA ENCHANTED, ALICE IN WONDERLAND, MY WEEK WITH MARILYN, THE GOOD LIAR, SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, STALIN and way more.
Matt Lucas
Matt Lucas is the actor behind Prodnose in WONKA, one of the members of the Chocolate Cartel in the film. The actor has appeared in films before this one, including BRIDESMAIDS, IN SECRET, ALICE IN WONDERLAND, MISSING LINK, I CAME BY, A FUTILE AND STUPID GESTURE, and more.
Lucas is also well-known for his television work in sketch shows such as "Little Britain" and "Come Fly With Me." Lucas is also set to appear in the upcoming GLADIATOR 2, so movie lovers will soon see him again.
Olivia Colman
Olivia Colman plays Mrs. Scrubitt in WONKA, a woman who is the co-owner of the inn Wonka stays at – also tricking him into working for them. The actress has been around for decades. Some of her most-known movies include THE FAVOURITE, THE FATHER, THE IRON LADY, LOCKE, THE LOST DAUGHTER and more.
Colman has also appeared in a variety of critically acclaimed TV shows, including "The Crown" on Netflix, "Fleabag" on Amazon Prime, and "The Night Manager," which earned her several award nominations.
Keegan-Michael Key
The comedic actor Keegan-Michael Key plays The Chief-of-Police in WONKA, someone who works for the police force but also seems to quite like Wonka’s chocolate, based on what we see in the trailer. Key is known for his sketch show, "Key & Peele," with frequent collaborator Jordan Peele, but he's also been in several movies.
Some of his most known include PITCH PERFECT 2, THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE, DON'T THINK TWICE, and THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE.
Paterson Joseph
Lastly, we have Slugworth, another member of the Chocolate Cartel, according to Yahoo, who’s portrayed by Paterson Joseph. The actor is known for several major TV shows, such as "The Leftovers," "Peep Show," "Safe House" and more, but has appeared in a variety of movies as well.
These include but aren't limited to, THE OTHER MAN, GREENFINGERS, THE BEACH, RISE AND FALL OF THE CITY OF MAHAGONNY, and THE LONG RUN.
Also appearing in WONKA is Calah Lane as Noodle, Natasha Rothwell as Piper Benz, Rakhee Thakrar as Lottie Bell, Rich Fulcher as Larry Chucklesworth, and Mathew Baynton as Fickelgruber. Talk about a stacked cast – and now, you can check out WONKA at a local AMC Theatre near you.
