The past few years have felt like a new renaissance for action movies, and 2024 will be another banner year for the genre. With directors like Ridley Scott, David Leitch, and George Miller all coming out with new films starring actors like Paul Mescal, Ryan Gosling, and Anya Taylor-Joy, there is a lot to look forward to seeing on the big screen in the next few months.
Here are some of the most anticipated action films like THE FALL GUY, FURIOSA: A MAD MAX SAGA, GLADIATOR 2, and others we just can’t wait to check out when they debut at AMC Theatres nationwide.
The action movie calendar will kick off in explosive fashion with the arrival of David Ayer’s THE BEEKEEPER, a thriller starring Jason Statham as a man who embarks upon a brutal and dangerous campaign for vengeance after his friend and neighbor loses everything to a phishing scam. Armed with righteous rage, a small arsenal, and years of experience working with a clandestine group known as “Beekeepers,” Adam Clay works his way up the food chain to get payback and make things right.
Josh Hutcherson, Jeremy Irons, Emmy Raver-Lampman, and Minnie Driver also appear in what could be the most action-packed movie coming to the cinemas this January.
THE BEEKEEPER opens January 12
Over the past decade, Matthew Vaughn has established himself as one of the freshest and most creative filmmakers in the action genre with his KINGSMAN franchise, but now the director is kicking off a new property with ARGYLLE. This upcoming star-studded action comedy follows Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard), a writer who inadvertently predicts the future with popular spy novels, putting her in the crosshairs of a very real and dangerous underground crime syndicate.
With the help of undercover spy Aiden Wilde (Sam Rockwell), Elly will dive into the chaotic and deadly world of espionage, where nothing and no one can be trusted. Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa, John Cena, and Catherine O’Hara also star in this reality-bending thriller.
ARGYLLE opens February 2
David Leitch has had quite a run the past few years with modern-day action classics like JOHN WICK, ATOMIC BLONDE, and BULLET TRAIN under his belt. This year, the filmmaker will return to the genre once more with THE FALL GUY, a new action comedy starring Ryan Gosling as a past-his-prime stuntman and Emily Blunt as a director who must work together to find a missing Hollywood star and save their latest movie.
Based on the Lee Majors TV show of the same name, THE FALL GUY looks to be full of incredible action, side-splitting comedy, and a tremendous amount of chemistry between its two main stars. This one can’t come soon enough.
THE FALL GUY opens May 3
This summer, George Miller will take us back to the Wasteland in FURIOSA: A MAD MAX SAGA. Set years before 2015’s FURY ROAD, this upcoming prequel will follow a young Imperator Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) as she finds herself caught in the middle of an epic fight between two rival warring factions as she attempts to make her way back home to the Green Place of Many Mothers. This won’t be an easy task, as the unforgiving terrain and the demented inhabitants who call it home stand in her way.
One of our most anticipated movies of the year, FURIOSA: A MAD MAX SAGA also stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke, and Nathan Jones.
FURIOSA: A MAD MAX SAGA opens May 24
Though the future of Keanu Reeves’ titular assassin is still up in the air, the JOHN WICK franchise will continue pushing forward this year with BALLERINA, a new movie starring Ana de Armas as a trained killer on a revenge mission. Set between the events of JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 – PARABELLUM and JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4, Len Wiseman’s action thriller follows the ballerina-turned-assassin as she sets out to find and kill those who played a role in her family’s murder.
Franchise stars like Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, Anjelica Huston, and the late Lance Reddick will all reprise their roles in this highly-anticipated, world-building adventure.
BALLERINA opens June 7
Four years after bringing the franchise out of hibernation, directors Adil & Bilall are back for another round of buddy cop action with BAD BOYS 4. Though details about the plot have largely been kept under wraps, it’s impossible not to get excited about seeing Will Smith’s Mike Lowrey and Martin Lawrence’s Marcus Bennett take to the streets of Miami once again.
We’re still waiting to hear more about the next chapter in one of the premier action comedy properties, which is making this even more anticipated.
BAD BOYS 4 opens June 14
Nearly 30 years after TWISTER arrived in theatres and gave audiences some of the most iconic movie moments of the ‘90s, Lee Isaac Chung is coming out with a sequel, which is appropriately titled TWISTERS. Though we won’t be seeing those iconic characters played by the likes of Bill Paxton, Helen Hunt, or Philip Seymour Hoffman, the long-awaited follow-up film will introduce us to a new batch of tornado experts played by Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos, to name a few.
This is another movie we don’t know much about at this time, but how can you not get excited about seeing massive tornadoes on the biggest screen possible?
Remind Me TWISTERS opens July 19
Nearly a quarter-century after taking audiences back in time to the Roman Empire, Ridley Scott will guide us through the historical era once again with GLADIATOR 2. Set 15 years after the first film, the highly-anticipated sequel will follow Lucius Verus (Paul Mescal), the now-adult nephew of Emperor Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) who once looked up to Maximus Decimus (Russell Crowe), as he reconnects with Roman society.
Though Crowe and Phoenix won’t be around this time, GLADIATOR 2 will see the return of Connie Nielsen’s Lucilla and Derek Jacobi’s Senator Gracchus, as well as the introduction of characters played by Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and Fred Hechinger.
Remind Me GLADIATOR 2 opens November 22
