Nicolas Cage Takes Fans On A Wild Ride

There’s a moment early in the new comedy THE UNBEARABLE WEIGHT OF MASSIVE TALENT where Nicolas Cage is driving his car down a main street in Los Angeles and carrying on a conversation with… Nicolas Cage. Only, the Cage in the passenger seat isn’t the modern day Cage. Instead, this exaggerated version of the legendary actor looks like he just stepped off the set of one of Cage’s 1990s classics, either CON AIR, FACE/OFF or THE ROCK.
In other words, get ready for a double dose of Nick Cage that’s unlike anything else you have seen the actor do before. And that is exactly why you are going to want to be at an AMC Theatres location the moment this movie opens on April 22.
Nic Cage Plays Nic Cage… Sort Of
In THE UNBEARABLE WEIGHT OF MASSIVE TALENT, which held its world premiere at the South By Southwest film festival in Austin, Cage pokes fun at his own legacy and film career by playing a fictional version of himself – a working actor who’s struggling with finances, family issues, and fading popularity. When Cage is offered $1 million to appear at the private birthday party of an adoring fan – played by Pedro Pascal – he begrudgingly accepts, and ends up on an adventure that involves unpublished screenplays, kidnapped daughters of international drug dealers, and endless references to the actual films of Nic Cage.
THE UNBEARABLE WEIGHT OF MASSIVE TALENT doesn’t linger too long in Los Angeles. To attend this party, Cage has to shuttle to a private island that is the home of Javi (Pascal), a wealthy businessman who might be a criminal… if the FBI agents camped outside of his compound can be trusted. These agents – played by Tiffany Haddish and Ike Barinholtz – recruit Cage into their mission because they see the A-list actor as their only way to infiltrate Javi’s home. But can Cage lead a double life while still being himself around his biggest fan?
The thing about THE UNBEARABLE WEIGHT OF MASSIVE TALENT is the way that it walks a very fine line between being indulgent and self-referential, but also being accessible and sweet for audience members who might not know as much about Nicolas Cage as a die-hard film enthusiast. Pedro Pascal’s character, Javi, is a film buff who desperately wants his hero to read a screenplay and agree to collaborate on a film. And in their bond, we get to the heart of what inspires creativity, and what has kept Cage chasing the high of telling exciting stories over the course of four decades.
Not Afraid To Get Weird
Still, as I mentioned, THE UNBEARABLE WEIGHT OF MASSIVE TALENT isn’t afraid to plunge into the surreal, as when Cage conducts conversations with “Nicky,” the imaginary version of himself who occasionally pops up to criticize anything and everything that the self-loathing actor is doing. “Nicky” is the inner child hiding inside of Cage, and when he’s unleashed, this ribald comedy kicks the tone up two more notches, taking hard left turns for the audience into territory even the most open-minded Cage fans won’t be expecting.
Even if you haven’t watched every Nick Cage movie in the actor’s history, there’s plenty of fun to be had with THE UNBEARABLE WEIGHT OF MASSIVE TALENT.
In addition to Nicolas Cage and Pedro Pascal, THE UNBEARABLE WEIGHT OF MASSIVE TALENT stars Sharon Horgan, Ike Barinholtz, Alessandra Mastronardi, Jacob Scipio, Lily Sheen, Tiffany Haddish and Neil Patrick Harris. Check out the trailer for the movie below:
Cage and Pascal form an admirable relationship in THE UNBEARABLE WEIGHT OF MASSIVE TALENT, grown men becoming fast friends while one of them happens to collaborate with the FBI. Again, you don’t have to know all of Cage’s previous films, but it’d be wise to stream FACE/OFF, THE ROCK, and probably GONE IN 60 SECONDS in preparation for this wild ride.
The comedy will be opening in AMC Theatres later in April, so make sure that you have secured your tickets for opening weekend.
