Audiences experienced a ton of great 2023 movies at AMC Theatres locations nationwide, but now that the year has wound down, we get to look forward to all the big releases on the way. From epic sci-fi movies like DUNE: PART 2 to the long-in-the-works adaptation of NOSFERATU, and so much more, we’re going to have plenty of reasons to return to the cineplex throughout the year.
Here are our most anticipated movies in 2024.
The upcoming musical, MEAN GIRLS, will see a new set of faces playing iconic characters like Cady Heron, Regina George, and the rest of the Plastics when it arrives on the big screen in early 2024. An adaptation of the Broadway musical that’s based on the 2004 comedy of the same name, the movie will present the story to audiences like never before.
MEAN GIRLS opens January 12th, 2024
After being delayed and then moved up, Denis Villeneuve’s DUNE: PART TWO will continue the saga of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) as he attempts to unite the Fremen and Chani to enact vengeance against those who killed his father and attempted to wipe out his family. With new allies and formidable enemies, the young leader is preparing for quite a fight, one that could have long-term ramifications for himself and the rest of the galaxy.
DUNE: PART TWO opens March 1st, 2024
George Miller will return to the Wasteland once again with FURIOSA, a prequel set in the broken world and hellish landscape of his MAD MAX franchise. Set years before the events of MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, the movie follows a young Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) as she gets caught between two sides in the ultimate showdown for the wasteland.

Set nearly 300 years after the reign of Caesar came to an end, Wes Ball’s KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES will follow a young chimpanzee named Noa (Owen Teague) as he sets out to find a better path forward after a ruthless ruler begins to entrap rival tribes alongside humans, who have almost become feral beasts.

Pixar will bring its signature heart and animation style to the big screen once again with the release of INSIDE OUT 2, the long-awaited sequel to the critically acclaimed 2015 animated film. As Riley becomes a teenager, Joy (Amy Poehler) and the other emotions are joined by a new arrival, the chaotic and neurotic Anxiety (Maya Hawke).

The popular A QUIET PLACE horror franchise will go back to the very beginning over the summer with the release of a spin-off prequel starring Luipta Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn, Alex Wolff, and Djimon Hounsou. Directed by Michael Sarnoski, A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE will show how the mysterious and deadly alien invasion kicked off and decimated the planet.

We don’t know much of anything about DEADPOOL 3 besides the fact that Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine will be joining Ryan Reynolds’ sarcastic titular anti-hero in the upcoming superhero movie, but that’s reason enough to be excited for this much-talked-about summer release. Oh, and it could very well be the first R-rated MCU movie…
Remind Me DEADPOOL 3 opens July 26th, 2024
There have been some great video game adaptations in recent years, and it looks like that trend will continue in 2024 with the release of Eli Roth’s BORDERLANDS. Based on the first-person shooter role-playing game of the same name, the movie will star the likes of Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black, and others to bring those beloved and unforgettable characters to life.
Remind Me BORDERLANDS opens August 9th, 2024
Set between the events of ALIEN and ALIENS, Fede Álvarez’s upcoming addition to the legendary horror/sci-fi franchise will serve as a standalone film that could breathe new life into the property. It’s another movie where plot details are scant at this point, but we can’t help but get excited about seeing 2023 breakout star Cailee Spaeny take on a Xenomorph in the vacuum of space.
Remind Me ALIEN: ROMULUS opens August 16th, 2024
One of three live-action films set in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe slated for release in 2024, KRAVEN THE HUNTER will follow one of the comic book hero’s most iconic nemeses, Sergei Kravinoff (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), as he attempts to prove he’s the greatest hunter to ever live. Ariana DeBose, Russell Crowe, Fred Hechinger, and others, will also portray some of Marvel’s more interesting characters.
KRAVEN THE HUNTER opens August 30th, 2024
Thirty-six years after introducing us to the fantastical and demented world of BEETLEJUICE, Tim Burton will take audiences on a new adventure set in the universe. Titled BEETLEJUICE 2, the upcoming sequel will bring back the likes of Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton), Lydia (Winona Ryder) and Delia Deetz (Catherine O’Hara), while also bringing in new characters portrayed by Willem Dafoe, Monica Bellucci, and the latest scream queen, Jenna Ortega.
Remind Me BEETLEJUICE 2 opens September 6th, 2024
In October 2024, Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix will return to the scene of the crime five years later with JOKER: FOILE À DEUX, the highly anticipated sequel to their 2019 Oscar®-winning comic book movie. This time around, Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck will be joined by the crown prince’s longtime partner-in-crime, Harley Quinn, played by Lady Gaga.

Though Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix’s characters won’t be around this time for obvious reasons, Ridley Scott’s GLADIATOR 2 sounds just as promising as its predecessor nearly a quarter-century ago. This time around, Paul Mescal will take on the role of Lucius Verus, who has grown up since watching his hero and uncle kill one another in the Coliseum all those years ago.

MEAN GIRLS isn’t the only Broadway adaptation on the 2024 movie calendar, as Jon M. Chu will give us his interpretation of the beloved musical, WICKED, or at least the first part, before the end of the year. Starring Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, and others, this dazzling story of how the Wicked Witch of the West becomes so devilish, and green, is one we don’t plan on missing.
WICKED: PART ONE opens November 27th, 2024
Christmas will come a few days early for video game fans, as Jeff Fowler’s SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3 will land in theaters shortly before the big holiday. With Ben Schwartz, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, and Idris Elba all returning to voice their beloved speedsters, there’s reason to believe this will be just as good as the two films that came before it. Plus, there’s Shadow the Hedgehog to look forward to…

It seems like Robert Eggers has been talking about remaking the legendary horror flick, NOSFERATU, for years at this point, but it’s finally coming to fruition. Before the end of the year, we will all get to see what the filmmaker behind THE WITCH and THE LIGHTHOUSE has in store for us with his star-studded tale of gothic horror.
