Movie lovers heading into the desert for the annual CinemaCon, a presentation for theatre exhibitors showcasing the slate of upcoming films, had to leave Las Vegas feeling very excited about the rest of this year. Marvel Studios has two superhero features coming this summer. Tom Cruise is back on the big screen, and Pixar has something special for families. The movies are back in full swing, and every major studio brought extremely exciting content to show off, including the following five moments that got us the most excited.
The summer season tends to be one of the busiest at AMC Theatres, with eager crowds packing multiplexes to see the latest blockbusters. These are a few that you should have on your release calendar. See you at the movies.
Tom Cruise Hops Back In The Top Gun Cockpit
Tom Cruise wasn’t in Las Vegas for CinemaCon. He instead filmed a video greeting for attendees… while he was standing in the cockpit of a biplane, flying over a massive valley in South Africa. As one does! But Cruise was welcoming us to watch TOP GUN: MAVERICK, his anticipated sequel to the 1986 smash hit. And this follow up film is everything that you want from a blockbuster sequel, with edge-of-your-seat aerial sequences (filmed as practically as possible), and surprising drama and heart. Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, and Val Kilmer star in the sequel.

Get Ready To Meet Multiple Doctor Strange(s)
As mentioned, Marvel Studios has both THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER and DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS coming to theatres this summer, and the executive took the stage at CinemaCon to showcase the first 20 minutes of the latter. Benedict Cumberbatch’s sorcerer is dealing with the aftermath of the spell he cast for Spider-Man (Tom Holland), which has opened a portal to the Multiverse. And based on the footage that we managed to see, things are going to get very STRANGE when this sequel drops very soon.

The Rock Is Back (In Black)
If Marvel isn’t your thing, their rivals at DC also plan to bring several films to multiplexes between now and the end of the year. SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS and DC SUPER PETS both look exciting and fun, but Dwayne Johnson’s BLACK ADAM appears to be creating a new world on a massive scale. The Rock hit the stage in Las Vegas to introduce his role as the title character in BLACK ADAM, who is a former slave bestowed with the powers of ancient Egyptian gods. This one looks spectacular.
Remind Me BLACK ADAM opens October 21st
Pixar Takes Us To Infinity… And Beyond!
As part of Disney and Pixar’s presentation, the studios clarified the plot of the upcoming LIGHTYEAR, and then showcased the first 30 minutes of the animated movie. While we originally thought that LIGHTYEAR had direct connections to the TOY STORY franchise, instead this is the feature film that young Andy watched as a kid that made him want to get a Buzz Lightyear action figure. LIGHTYEAR plays like Pixar’s take on STAR WARS, with Chris Evans lending his voice to the main character.

Baz Luhrmann's Elvis Reinvents The Musical Biopic
MOULIN ROGUE! director Baz Luhrmann doesn’t make conventional movies. He filters his stories through a vibrant lens, and his upcoming ELVIS looks as imaginative and innovative as ROMEO + JULIET or THE GREAT GATSBY. Slip on your “Blue Suede Shoes” and follow Elvis Presley’s meteoric rise to fame, even as conservative leadership stood in opposition to his passionate music. Austin Butler embodies The King, and will be joined by Hollywood icon Tom Hanks as the man behind Elvis’ career, Col. Tom Parker.
Remind Me ELVIS opens in theatres June 24th
